Many people are afraid to write poems for their loved ones. “It’s too complicated” and “I’ll sound like an idiot” are both very popular excuses. But think about it—if the person you’re writing to loves you in return, would they honestly think of your heartfelt words as idiotic? Hardly! Here are a few different types of poetry to get you in the mood.
Here's a sonnet, for instance:
My love is like a fire ablaze
So different from our early days
When passion's heat was young and new;
The world began with me and you.
Then time, who marches on and on,
Made our feelings deep and strong.
Love's power overtook my life,
And soon, my love became my wife.
I would have missed a valued part
Had I not you, my sweetest heart.
Know that this comes from my soul
Because my loved one makes me whole.
This sonnet now ends with a sigh,
Though love for you will never die.
And here’s a tanka, also known as an ancient Japanese love poem:
Thinking of my heart’s
Desire, the curve of his back
Highlighted by morning’s glow.
I want to see him again.
Come back to me, love.
If you want to be funny and romantic, try a limerick:
So here is someone who loves you
Who’s trying to flirt and to woo;
She wrote a few lines
And is looking for signs
And hopes that you like her work too!
Don’t want to write from your point of view because you think it’s boring? Try personifying something else:
Here I sit in the living room,
Waiting for the recipient to come home.
She takes off my ribbons. A poem!
Now I am crushed with hugs and kisses.
And of course, there’s the favorite cousin of the tanka, the haiku:
Looking in your eyes
Sinking deep into their depths
Can’t get enough of you
Last but not least, in the event that you don’t like structure, try free verse:
Hi honey,
I wanted to impress you with my poetry, but
I don’t think I’m that good.
Just wanted you to know I love you.
Love, Me
There are many, many different types of poetry out there, but remember that the best kind comes straight from the heart. It doesn’t matter how fancy or detailed your writing is; even the simplest “I love you” will mean a lot to the person it’s being given to. So put that pen to paper and get romantic!
