Condemned man dies during execution, updated.

A news item today reports on a condemned man who had a heart attack when the "lethal" injection failed to work properly,

To my way of thinking this leaves us with several questions -

Should we be executing people in the first place?
Can we not in 2014 come up with a lethal injection that both works & is humane?
When can we expect to see the bastard that raped & murdered an 11 month old girl who was due to be executed two hours later put to death?

UPDATE.
Further details of the days events are now available on the BBC news site for those that haven't already seen them.

How inconsiderate of him,
You think he would have waited till it was over ! uh oh
No such thing as humane Murder .
Its an oxymoron. You just either agree with it or you dont.
Personally I dont Zman. I tend to worry if I might one day be the innocent victim.
Non, they obviously didn't give him a proper medical to see if he was fit for execution doh grin beer
Hi Zen. I personally disagree with the death sentence.
It´s "An Eye for an Eye, and a Tooth for a Tooth" thing!
doh
In 2014...yeah...? Aren´t we supposed to be "evolved" beings?
wave angel

I haven´t watched the video. But, the fact that he had a heart attack after finding out that the injection didn´t work, it could mean that he felt guilty and was disappointed as he wanted to die?dunno
I have always wondered why they do not fully sedate the person beforehand.
"The risk of an innocent victim being put to death..."
Yep, this could also happen.doh

Maybe you should watch the David Gale story who proved it.
"the danger of being let out and doing it again"?
Well, then they should be kept in jail for as long as it is needed and receive psychiatric treatment.

Instead of "death sentence", then it should be "life" emprisonment.dunno
candykid, as I understand it the injection is actually 3 injections, the first of which presumably is supposed to do just that, having seen the vet put down several animals who were suffering the process looked very comforting for the animals so why it should be so hard for humans is a bit of a mystery, maybe the fact the victim knows what's happening makes them fight the drugs dunno beer
Min, to me the only reason to give this treatment you mention is if you intend to let them out, I find that quite worrying as the medical profession have a history of pronouncing people cured when in fact they are anything but doh
Hi Zman!
Although it's much cheaper of course for a state to fullfil capital punishment rather than holding a prisoner for a lifetime, I am against any kind of death penalty. I am glad that many people share this opinion. I hope that rules will change soon in all US states.
It is a mix of three drugs. Sodium pentathol being one of them, but the drug that is used to sedate them is a benzodiazepine which is a tranquilizer. They are not under full anesthetic as one would be in major surgery. Another interesting fact is that most inmates when asked what they want as their last meal, ask for raw onions, and lots of them.
zman had to sign in for this one, I must admit when young the death penalty I did not agree with.
Now older and seen some of life I have changed my mind. these days 99% certain that some one has committed crime. Maybe just maybe they should find a fail safe way like an animal is well sedated before lethal injection, but I do think of these foul peoples victims what they must have suffered and some a lot longer than him this brings me down to earth were any mercy I may have in my heart.
I wish they would bring it back in our country for a few decades at least an then these murder people may just think twice before doing the act.
Yes yes I hear you all saying it has been proven the death penalty is not a deterant but I just would like that proven again.
candykid, I imagine working out the correct dose for these people would be quite a task, most presumably have spent a lifetime taking all manner of drugs & a dose that would floor an elephant may have little effect on them confused
Redex, I have a lot of sympathy for that viewpoint but as Non pointed out there is still that 1% uh oh wow can we take that risk dunno wine
zman YES! is all I can say I only said 99% as nothing in this life is 100% but whith forensics as they are today they are preety much on the ball. I so agree with deltude statement he wrote it better than I.
I have got to admit I never in a hundred years ever ever think I would agree with death penalty but the horrifc things done as D said these are not even animals. At least they get to choose their last meal
Del, a worry indeed, here in Spain they are fond of giving huge sentences for crimes such as this, maybe 4000 years, but under Spanish law they cannot hold some for more than 23 years (approx, not sure exactly), that means the perpetrator will be free to repeat the crimes all over again doh beer
i hope he suffered terribly..and he felt the pain..shame he wasn't skinned..then bathed in salt.
Redex, I agree that forensic science is near infallible but unfortunately the police are not, they have a pretty poor record of contaminating evidence & that's before you consider those they have "fitted up" in the past, whilst it would be nice to think those days are over I think we all know they're not doh
Ian, a fan of the old hung, drawn & quartered method laugh they really knew how to make a deterrent in the old days laugh rolling on the floor laughing beer
ive no sympathy for him.He put his victims through hell.I hope he suffered. If its proven beyond a doubt the persons guilty then im all for executing them.If it ever happened to any of my family id happily give them the injection meself.
But zman these foul people are in prison long time before they get chopped so surely that can be made a safe confiction. Anyway it is more inhumane keeping people on death row for so long, JMO these days. teddybear
Del thumbs up bread and water should mean just that. No joking this time these people their crimes are terrible as you pointed out just one of them. They have tortured victims for days weeks etc. I truly have no mercy these days in my heart for these non peoples
Redex, just think every time you buy something in a shop, part of the tax on that product goes to providing these people with TV's, sports equipment etc frustrated has to be said there's little deterrent from the treatment they get in the UK doh
Del, I see we're thinking along the same lines laugh it only seems fair that if we have to have to let them live they should at least fund themselves by working, we all have to do that sigh
some prisons here are like holiday camps,. teles movies ensuites in cells gyms classes and the best of food. Their better off than half of us.All their missing out on is their freedom .Thats not much of a punishment for crimes like he was executed for
Yep zman I know that, So inject I say, better than being barbaric and chopping head off in blocks. But maybe just maybe.grin
furryflaps, I agree, seems the least we could do would be make them pay frustrated wine
I agree with you at all points....but no to Capital punishment....that is an encroachment of God's or Nature's territory?
123, I don't know how the "do gooders" have managed to sneak in conditions like those in the western world doh it's bad enough we have live on the same planet but to be paying for these luxuries is a bridge too far imo very mad thumbs up wine
iotatoo wow what too many people killed in the name of a god or for not believing a certain God.
These people have unmercfully killed tortured young children and people for just funroll eyes
It reminds me of a case in the US were a man picked up a young girl hitchhiking by the side of the road.
He later chopped both her arms with a hatchet!
Should I feel compassion or for a "human" treatment for that man?

I think justice went from one extreme to another. Some people had a hell of an existence in their lives but never committed such horrendous crimes.
Of course, it is a complicated subject, but without laws and retribution, society would fall apart.
There is no need to be more human than the inhuman criminals who show great contempt for human life or for law abiding citizens.

Let them earn their keep by working for the common good instead of free loading.

We cage innocent animals, why not cage guilty humans.

You are right Z, we contribute to society by working in a state of servitude, but no one worries about our human rights! cheers
iotaoo, seems to me both god & nature are inactive in this field leaving us to make the decisions & pay the price doh beer
Mental note to self - don't get on wrong side of Furry uh oh wow laugh rolling on the floor laughing
iotaoo, having said that I suppose it could be considered that god or nature did intervene in this case as he died anyway, one might say that was a sign dunno
Redex One wrong can't approve the other wrong. scold
Some 'humans' don't deserve to live after what they have done to innocent people. The death penalty is a deterrent thats makes the murderer think twice before acting.
ioatoo that's not what I was trying to do proving wrong for wrong it depends what you think is wrong that's all. Killing a human is wrong killing an inhuman person well mmmmm let me see its in respect for the dead person
Luke, maybe with the advent of televised trials some doubters maybe convinced when they hear the gruesome evidence, as an example we get daily doses from your famous trial running at the moment wow
Hi Z
My only question is: Does a person deserve to live when he had taken the live of another person for the sake of a watch or other another item?

When you live in a country with a low murder rate it is easy to talk.

South Africa has roughly 58 murders per day. South Africa had 40.4 murders per 100,000 people during 2006/2007.

Since the death penalty was abolished in South Africa the murder rate has escalated dramatically.

BTW. 94% of all persons released in SA after serving a sentence, immediately become involved in crime again.
frustrated very mad doh
@Z Please God or nature is never inactive,,,please you are healthy and sane...so you are not expected to be won over by emotions....no please if you go beyond reason...then what of the others??
This is a social issue....the blind materialism....It be carefully studied and remedied to cure the origin of this madness...there is something wrong basically??
Oversimplification will not do...
