Leg cramps! arrgghh

I was annoyed the first time I stretched in the morning and the lovely stretch turned into an agonizing spasm in my calf. Nothing like a rapid dance round the bedroom to get rid of that cramp as a brisk way to wake up, eh?

That's age, a friend said, I've had that for ages.

Damn and blast this age thing, I thought when it happened again. And again. (I think I was 51, 52, when it started happening)

So turns out, yes, an age thing in a way - I had stopped drinking water late in the evening because it annoyed me if I had to get up during the night to pee, but hey, turns out, that's why I was now getting the cramps. But you probably knew that anyway.

Every day a school day.

Taking magnesium before going to bed does the trick.thumbs up

It´s not really an "age" thing, as young people also get it.
It´s normally due to a lack of minerals -especially magnesium.
In hot weather, it gets even worse as we lose a lot of minerals through the skin and we should be drinking plenty of water - liters!

Have a nice day and, hopefully, a good night sleep.comfort
Sorry, I forgot..Potassium!
haha, thank you!

So far so good, the water has been doing the trick as it only happens every now and then but worth remembering when the nightly glass of water stops working!

That´s right Bung. One of my sons, who is now 38, has had leg cramps since a teenager.
He is a good swimmer, but couldn´t go alone in the sea in case he got a cramp!
All my sympathy Vivian, they are SOOOOOO painful!!! My cousin once got it in both her legs at the same time.. she was in totally agony not knowing which leg to work on. excrutiatingly (not sure how to spell it) painful!

Sending sympathy and hugs and hope you don`t have any more hug hug
loss of potacium and loss of water are main cause of mucle cramps but old age is also responsible for that as posiblity of muscles cramps are increased as the natural muscle loss that begins in our mid-40s. We also tend to be less active as we get olde.more we get older more is the loss of muscle mass ,so muscles activity is reduced and more wasit product are retained inside muscles thus causing cramps.drink plenty of water and eat banana.some time if person is suffring from chronic kidney failure it also give rise to muscle cramps.
In my early fifties I used to stretch my legs whilst sleeping thus getting cramp in my calf muscles .... so I know all about the "quick" bed exit doing a rain dance around the room swearing like a trooper.... Painful!

Essentially the cramp has nothing to do with age, a lot depends on how much exercise the leg gets, if you spend the day sitting for example you are more likely to get cramp than you would do if you spent more time on your feet.
Exercise, get potassium into your diet (banana is good) and as stated always rinse your mouth before bed time with water, then drink a glass of it just before sleep.
So, thanks, Dedovix and Sola, you scored the dog a late night walk, she thanks you. Exercise it is.

Red and Ken, banana will be added to general diet, they do seem to be a bit of a wonder food generally.

Apple cider is also something of a wonder food so I'm happy to add that, thanks Chameleon and Wildchild.

If you weren't already sorted, Bung, hope the advice here has helped!

So far the water seems to have stopped the war-dances but prevention is definitely better than cure, and thank you all very much. And thanks so much for the sympathy, Wallops, the wretched things are agonizing! laugh
