Snow in this place

So I went to bed on Sunday and they were talking about snow hitting the East Atlantic Coast on Monday. I am like, ho-hum because the places they spoke of, NYC, Boston, Rhode Island, etc. 300 - 600 miles away. Who cares? Then I woke up on Monday morning, went out on my deck and this is what I saw.

Not bad, maybe a quarter inch. But it didn't stop. That night I went to the store for some milk and when I got home this was the view of my driveway from the mailbox. Still falling.

So today, Tuesday, I see on television in NYC it was just a normal snowfall. A measly 10" and not worth any of the media hype it got. But in Boston, a direct hit. It is a winter hurricane/typhoon. The rain is all coming down as snow. 70 mile an hour wind gusts make it a blizzard. 10 hours or more. Tidal surges are putting many streets under water. Hours of storm to go still.

But in my place it has stopped. I don't even have enough snow on the ground to bother dusting off any of the plows or even my Toro Snowblower. If I have as much as 3" here I will be surprised.

This is what the same driveway would look like if this had been a 'real' snowfall. 3" is barely worth noticing I think.

Hi Ken
Snow is a rarity in South Africa. Other than a bit on the mountains in winter, it is unheard of in Capetown. I walked in the snow only three times in my life and that was in Johannesburg. And it was not much fun. We're no geared for it and last when I was in Johannesburg when it snowed, everything came to a standstill. The cars slid sideways into each other. doh

The child asks, mother it is possible I will fall to walk? Answers it mother. Go who holds you. It belongs my region when there is many snow and a frost. At us 35-40 degrees of a frost.

Ummka - OWWW! I thought my picture below (a few years ago, 40 something inches) of a heavy snow here was bad, but you beat me easily.

Well what is in your picture (only the snow pushed through the mail slot inside the house) probably wouldn't happen here because I think my front LR picture window would burst from the weight of the snow (thereby giving me much more snow (and glass too) to cope with inside the house). I can see the door in your picture bulging. Ouch!

That homeowner may wish to invest in a) a mop for when the entry hall is covered with water from melted snow, b) a door brace like one of these.

Many years ago high up in our Rocky Mountains I was in a small village where every building had both a roof overhang all around the house on any side with windows or doors (to keep the snow a few feet away, and also a second floor veranda with it's own entrance way. That is because in that location, incredibly deep snows were not uncommon. So the first floor door was used in the summer time, but when it was obscured by snow in the winter time, every one just switched to the second (or even 3rd) floor for exit and egress into the home or business. Every home had snowshoes. <LoL, that was the year I learned that like skis, there are several different types of snowshoes, with different designs for different purposes.> The whole town was built like that. This google photo is not from that town, but it shows what would have been fairly typical there, which is also a reason why I later on chose to not settle there. It is very easy to die and be found during the spring thaw, if you live in a place like that. Not my cup of tea. :)
