The definition of nothing

According to perceived wisdom the entire universe came about when an object the size of a tennis ball of unimaginable intensity exploded.

Putting aside how the tennis ball object got there in the first place, I am wondering what is the difference between 'nothing' and what we currently call 'space' ?

The 'tennis ball sized' object (which may actually have been much smaller, perhaps merely a potential place/object rather than an actual object, is believed by some to possibly be what was left of the last Universe when it collapsed. Or it was a leakage of Dark Matter/Energy from an adjoining Universe which reacted into real matter when in our space.

Regarding nothing.. First, we have 50 shades of nothingness. There is partial vacuum, and also total (true) vacuum. True vacuum is believed to be impossible to maintain. Whenever we try to manufacture it, sub-atomic particles pop into being. Whether or not they are a result of quantum fluctuation, dark matter, transiting neutrinos, etc. is still unknown.

'Space' is a dimensional concept. If you have a vacuum it is within a defined space or area. When we say something is in a space we normally know the dimensions of that space.

'Outer Space' is different, sort of. It refers to the Physical Universe and the area encompassed by it's boundaries. We do not yet know the extent of area covered (but it grows steadily as our measuring techniques improve) or if it even has borders.
Ok thanks Ken, I never knew we had some quantum physicists on here. i still don't get it but it's clear you know a good bit more about it than I do.
The concept of the birth of the universe suddenly beginning as a ball of intensely dense matter which exploded is nothing more than a theory. The fact is nobody knows how the universe began if in fact it even had a beginning. I don't think mankind will ever know for sure because there is no way to go back in time to the beginning and observe the event. Even if this universe was preceded by another universe which collapsed the question remains how did the former universe begin?
The simplest thing to do is enjoy thinking about it but don't expect to ever know the answer.
You are probably right. Science seems to regard their theory, if anything, as proof of no religion. However I do wonder if it kind of points to the opposite, since I don't see how something could have come from absolutely nothing on its own.
I was just thinking about this a couple of days ago, personally I can't get my head round the latest scientific explanation, making something from nothing, but then the religious explanation to me seems even more far fetched confused
Thanks Gypsy. I've given the subject a lot of thought. I don't ascribe to the scientific theory of the big bang because it has way too many inconsistencies such as the universe is expanding based solely on a 19 century phenomenon called the "Doppler Effect". That may work for train horns on earth but other factors are probably involved when trying to extrapolate that basic idea to Galaxies millions of light years away. Especially when light must run the gamut of a gravitational matrix.
I accept the Biblical explanation even less by an order of magnitude. "And god separated the dark from the light and said it was good..." Oh puleeze!
BTW are you a Hungarian Gypsy?
Nothing is the absence of all things and that is not really possible as nothing is never completely empty.
Ooby, so you don't like the scientific or the religious theories. So what do you go for?
BTW, in the UK we have an old sitcom series called 'Only Fools and Horses' and you are the spitting image of the main character, Del Boy. But you sound more like the Professor than a market trader.
Ekself, but if there is nothing then there is nothing? It's only like imagining the space in an empty room being everywhere. And if there is something, how did it get there?
Crikey Ken, it just happens that I own a college in the UK. If we ever open a course on physics / astronomy or whatever this comes under I want you as a lecturer.
@ Love_stick, I've never seen Only fools & horses, because we don't get that here and someone about a year ago said the same thing about me & Del Boy. I just hope he's a cool guy.

My problem with an expanding universe has to do with the assertion that not only are the galaxies flying away from each other but they are accelerating. Nothing can accelerate without some force contributing energy to it. Scientists have never found the source of this force so they elected to call it Phantom Energy. I'm sorry but that sounds a little too much like Alice in Wonderland for my taste. You either find the source of this force and quantify it or IMO it doesn't exist.
The beauty of all this is whatever theory anybody comes up with it can never be proven or disproven.
Ken, the Red Shift can be explained by something like gravity actually slowing down the light wave or particle or whatever light is. A blue shift must be an approaching light source unless gravity can also speed up light which is doubtful. The observation of a blue shift alone blows the theory of an expanding universe right out of the water. You can't have it both ways.
So Love_stick, you ask what I'm into it's simply this. The speed of light is not finite. If it were, there could be no such thing as a black hole, once again, you can't have it both ways. Black holes and a finite light speed cannot exist at the same time, one negates the other.
LoL, civil engineering was my major, quantum physics my minor. I am so far behind though. So long ago CO2 lasers were the cutting edge. :)
