The Particular Beggar!

As I was pumping some gas into my car I was approached by this young man, probably about 25 or 30, on a bicycle. He didn't ask me for money he came out and said to give him a dollar.

I didn't answer him right away because I looked at his "position". He wore real nice jeans probably in the $50.00 price range. His pullover shirt was also looking pretty expensive as were his shoes. The kind you can look stylish in that are about $200.00 or so. And his bicycle was no cheap version, either.

I looked at him and told him. "I just spent my last dollar on this lottery scratcher. If I win some money I'll give you that dollar"! In a disgusting manner he looked at the ticket in my hand and just pedaled off without saying anything.

I didn't win anything but that was ok. My answer to him was what my intentions were, i.e., to make him go away. The disgusting look and all. No, I didn't think anything bad at all about him but in life no one needs to put up with rudeness and this DOOOOD was just that. Pretty rude.

And being calm always works!!

Hi Ed wave
if you didn't think anything bad about him, then why didn't you give him the dollar???
Oh! Eddie
I sometimes still give. And sometimes I want someone to give me a dollar too...blues
itchy!

Because, as I said in my blog, I spent the dollar on a lottery ticket and a dollar for him would have been pending if I won money! I didn't win money.
Angel,

I always give if I have some extra money. I didn't this time!

Ken!

That's the way I see it. Anyone as dapper as he was on an expensive bike was just being too demanding and looking affluent for a handout!
I agree, the point was he didn't ask for the money, he said just to give it to him.

I had this happen to me once (usually they ask), and I was flabbergasted. I made no excuse and didn't give the dollar (it was a teen boy with another teen in a store), but I remember being shocked and a little affronted to just being commanded like that.

Also, as Ed said, if they look affluent they don't need my dollar and what kind of person TELLS someone else to give them something? dunno

cheers

P.S. I usually am very generous when I think people need help.
laugh Think it was reasonable deal you offered him...especially since he didn't even ask you nicely. If he really needed the dollar he would have waited. thumbs up
Hi folks and pals,

Thanks for the comments. My exact point. When a stranger who looks real affluent says "Give me $$$" he needs a wake up call.

Ken,

If he would have pushed the matter further I would have called the cops. But he didn't and he just pedaled away.

OK, thanks everyone!!
A funny thing indeed.

I noticed the same!

I was returning to my car in a grocery store shopping lot and a man approached me, saying he needed money for food. I told him I had just finished shopping and he was welcome to have some of my groceries. He refused! He just wanted the money.

I believe this happened one other time, again only money was wanted.

Its makes you think.

My Dad told me that quite a good living can be made by just requesting money from strangers. Probably much more than the minimum wage! sad flower
A standard fraud tactic from drug users around here is to beg at gas stations. A sympathy tale, mom is in the hospital dying, etc., I am out of gas and have no money, please loan me $5 for gas. They hang around for hours till someone tells a clerk and they get chased. Every now and then they circle the station and pull up to a different gas pump, then give the sob story to the next person in line. You want to get them upset? Don't give them $5. Instead tell them you will pay inside for $5 of gas for them. They don't want that of course because usually their tank is full and they just want more money for drugs, not yucky gas.
lol, that's a good one, Ken. 'Course they might make a couple dollars saving on gas if their tank was a little less full! laugh
