Help!! I'm surrounded by a male chauvinist p--s!
I need your help, good people of CS.
I am co-owner and director of a company that's in a male-dominated industry - auto repair. I was brought in to help save the company from ruin because the guys who were running it were very disorganised. Accounting, HR, CSR - all in a mess. I came in and cleaned everything up, includng their image. Now that they're seeing improvements, they're making decisions without my input. Our suppliers are bypassing me and going directly to the guys who got the company in trouble in the first place.
I know very little about auto repair and I never interfere in their area of expertise. But they're lousy at the administrative stuff and that's my strength.
How do I assert myself and stop these guys from butting in and undermining me? I have a lot (money and time)invested in this company.

my two bits on this:
1. prepare a 'before and after' pps. this is for your benefit and assurance, but could be used possibly once off with pt.3 below.
2. consult with the person/s who bought you in' in the first place and see if you still have support from that angle.
3. amplify where company could be without your admin. input and possibly without your financial investment. organise periodical management meetings and 'show-off' your involvement in a subtle way.
4. make yourself the front(wo)man of the company with the financial institutions; in marketing and advertising; in stock and time control and signatory on cheques.
5. respect is earned not bought, so it might be a good idea to get to know some of the physical side of the business, which would keep you in the loop when technical meetings happen.
6. get them interested in what you do in your admin. work. my feeling is that they would probably lose interest in that part of the work and would rather carry on with the physical side of things.
remember, dogs that bark do not (usually) bite.

this was my first reaction. But I'm trying not run every time I feel intimidated or afraid. I'd like to learn more about this industry, too, so if I do leave I'll have another skill to take with me.

thanks for you suggestions. These are great. Already tried some of them: taking an interest in the tech side. (learned to do oil changes and a couple of other minor stuff); updating them on admin issues, safety and compliance (v. important in this industry). I think the major problem is my size: I'm small and appear rather delicate, so there's a perception that I'm outside element.
I'll try your suggestions. Not ready to throw in the towel - just yet.

Protect your investment.
If the men do not want to respect the equity (money and time) you have in the business they can buy you out.
Sorry if I sound harsh but it sounds like you are the only one who is looking at the big picture there.

If I was you, I would just say enough is enough! The guys who got your company in trouble shouldn't even be working there in the first place. If anybody their at your workplace does not respect you or what you do for your company then you need to go ahead and turn in your resignation, take your money and RUN! and if they get into any touble, guess what? that's their problem and not yours. I'm sure that their is a company out there for you who could use you in your special field of administrative. I learned this old saying from a friend of mine about the whole work thing ''It is not who you know but it is who you blow''

if you helped before this company ,and you took them from the bottom and now they are up again ,and they don't calculate you ..

, hey there is not much to do ,i mean .. if they do one time ,they can do second and third time ,people could be very evil and withour hearth ! so ..just a good lawyer ,take some doucoments who approve the society was down and after you ...now is well again . and ask for your quote of the society and then disappear from that people !!
i'm sure if you made that demostration ..you will expect more money that what you give to them before ! and start a new society ,or shop ,or new activities ,by your self or with people more respctfull!

Wow! Thanks everyone, for your comments. I have started looking for another opportunity. This time I will be the sole owner. The partnership route just doesn't seem to work for me. I keep getting burnt.
