2 vine harvest

So I have 4 Butternut squash vines here this year. Today I decided enough leaves had faded back on two of them to go ahead and harvest the yield from them. This (plus 2 others previously devoured) is the yield from the two vines in question. The other 2 vines have similar yields waiting but I haven't harvested them yet. Noting also I still have some green babies coming in.

Although a good knife will eventually saw through the stems, I find the large sheet metal shears shown to be the quickest way of detaching them from the vines. I am running out storage space and still have 2 vines to go. moping

This was a good strain of seed. I am saving some of the seeds of course.

I usually just roast and eat (w/butter, salt & pepper) but here the man goes a step further and, since it looks tasty, I may try this..

Hello Ken, wave I tried squash a few yrs back, it was roasted up with ham, couldn t believe how good the two went together. Will definitely be looking for squash at the next farmers market.

That's so cool! I'll have a straw bale garden next year, I hope I can grow all kinds of vegetables, especially squash, pumpkin and beans. I came across a book that shows how to use bales. I don't have much time for weeding, sounds like an easy way to have a garden.
Say Ken. I cut the top off of a plastic barrel. Add some straw, then squash, more straw, etc. In a dry barn, I am still eating them in Spring.
As far as the straw bail post goes. Start feeding the bails now. It takes a long time to get the nutrients into them. leave them in the weather all winter.
I'll better get started then C, need to do that in the garage, since I would run into trouble finding the bales in the snow :)
If you ship you Vietnam I would help to buy some! :)

I used on of the small ones last night to make the fritters in the video. Quite good even though my sage was chopped from a bottle.

I mostly use butter with Squash, and I have done them with olive oil. However, these things are so good you could probably use Canola oil and they would still taste just fine. grin

Lou - We agree on the spaghetti squash too. I wanted to plant some this year along with the butternut, but none of the stores where such seeds are usually found had any on the days I visited. Worth noting this year's crop of butternut squash seeds all came from pulled out of store bought squash I was going to eat (and did). So not all seeds of veggies sold in the supermarket are sterile. Next time I see a spaghetti squash for sale I will buy it and save the seeds.
Note to self: eating an entire large roasted squash in one sitting leaves one feeling very stuffed. laugh
