major fire

In Oakland California severa individuals illegally moved into a two story warehouse. There was only one entrance. access to the second floor was only by a rickety wooden stairs made from shipping pallet. The first floor is described as being filled with furniture and crates. Zoning officials were aware of complaints and had opened an investigation into the zoning violations. Last night a rave (party) was held there. Several hundred young people attennded. A fire broke out. There were no sprinklers. The stairs burnt and many were trapped. This morning with only 20% of the ruins searched over 20 bodies have been found. Many others are still missing and are believed to be inside somewhere.

Hi Ken,

Yeah, I read about it this morning! The news is saying as high as 35 bodies and more to come! What a tragedy! I think all of the people were young in their 20's etc.sigh
Yes. what I am hearing reminds me of the Gullivers Inn fire in Connecticut back in the 70s. In that one an exit door had been chained shut to prevent kids from sneaking in during a rock concert. The performers used pyrotecnic sparklers and paper mache and the curtains caught fire. I beleve that death toll was 90 something youngsters.
My news radio now confirms 24 youngster in Californnia. Debris is being removed in buckets and sifted. Slow and heartbreaking. Many families standing outside the Perimeter waiting for word.
...........sad flower
Sorry to hear about the incidence, Ken.. sad flower
Toll is 33 now but debris removal/search continues. As expected toxic smoke with no ventilation or exit was lethal. A criminal investigation targetting whoever the investors or warehouse owners are hss been announced since the use of the building for anything but warehouse was prohibited. likewise there was no permit for the rave. Cause of the fire still being looked at.
As tragic as the loss of any human life is, it's a fact of life that there will always be accidents and there will always be media coverage.

The people were there of their own free will .

No one can or should be held accountable for a tragic accident.
OB That is not how US law works. If the circustances involving a death include a violation of law, such as a rave in an unsafe area with no permit, someone will be charged. A basic tenet of US law is landlords have a legal obligation to ensure a tenants use of a property complies with zoning, drug and fire safety laws. A rent payment does not evvade culpability. Second although the origin point of the fire hasbeen determined, its cause has not ebeen. Therefore any use of the word accident is way premature.
Count todat is 36 including some children.
Oldblue, I suggest you read the following link. It may open your eyes to the fact that sometimes people, especially kids, need to be protected from themselves. The owners of this warehouse are guilty of reckless endangerment. In this country there are building codes which must be adhered to or the building owner will not be granted an occupancy permit. Somebody dropped the ball and a lot of innocent lives were lost.

...individuals illegally moved into a two story warehouse....

How can the owners be held accountable for the tragic deaths ?

If I break and enter am I not in violation of the basic law ?
Warehouse tenants took up residence in the warehouse. That played a role in what happened. In America a landlord is liable for what his tenants doon the propeerty. Landlords who don't check aredeemed to be willfully ignorant and therefore remain culpable.
Of interest tonight is a surviving witness statement that flames were shooting out of the back of a refrigerator.
