Stop right now just stop. Even if for an instant stop and look around you to see what is. Peace resides in the 'what is' suffering resides in the desire to have the 'what is' as something it nevr can be.

Different strokes for different folks, neverthless to quiten the mind chatter, I would like to recommend ambient music and meditation together, and, attention to breathing could help if stress is involved here.

Alternatively, stay on the computer, or, read and stay up later before going to bed to induce tiredness.

Diet, exercise all may play a part here.

I may be way of the mark , you might need the assistance of a Doctor, or alternative medicine practitioner, absolutely last choice, sleep inducing prescription drugs!!!

Sorry if my reply is simplistic, I understand how lack of full sleep affects one's daily enjoyment of life.

Best wishes!

I would go with all of the above as good ideas, but especially the meditation.

There is a listening exercise you can do that definitely helps. It involves listening to(really concentrating on), the sounds in the room, then sounds further and further away. You will only be able to concentrate on sounds for a few seconds at first before the racing thoughts come back but keep persevering and it gets longer, until you hardly have them at all.

Stress causes a lot of anxious thinking and racing thoughts, so try to minimise your stressers in life. I wouldn't reccommend the "staying up late until you are tired" advice as it can often make things worse. Good exercise is a necessity, too, in your day, but never in the evening, as it gives an adernalin rush that is difficult to come down from at bed time.

Accupuncture is good too, as it going to your doctor and having him/her check you out, to make sure you are getting adequate sleep at the right level. People who sleep lightly or snore often have racing thought and fatigue problems.wine

You may not believe this..but you may well be starting the first stages of menopause...yes at 40!
Forget what the statistics are on the age being 56...you sound as l was at 40...waking up at all hours and thinking a lot at night..during it..and when going to sleep.

Much to the protests of the doctors "no you arent going through menopause"...l knew it and they were wrong!
Too young?...not in this modern day no.
l finished menopause by the age of 46.

Get rosemary oil...the pure form.
Put it on your neck and temples...use liberally it evaporates anyway leaving no oil...it sends you into the feeling of having had a massage.Dont be afraid to use plenty.lts the only oil that soaks up to 3 inches into the body.
No wonder they used it daily in old biblical days.lve been using it for 20 years:)
My daughters use it now too..in their lives.
My father suffered insomnia...he was converted...and my mother fell asleep in my arms as l massaged rosemarry oil on her temples and neck while she suffered with migrain. She woke up free of the migrane.
lt works...buy some:)
