It ought to be a crime to smoke. But rather than jail time, a manditory detox stay. These people are apparently too addicted and/or too dumb to quit on their own. Their second hand smoke not only is deleterious to themselves, but to anyone who breathes it. This would rapidly end the tobacco industry here for good. That would save billions in healthcare money and increase the life expectancy of the general population as well.

Well, Jimnastics, here in my country, Denmark (5,5 million citizens), we have been told nearly the same as you say: quit smoking and we'll save billions in healthcare and you'll expect to live longer...that's true, but what you forget is how much (our) state or goverment earns in taxes on tobacco: It cost 3 billion Kroner (600 million dollars) in healthcare to treat the smokers, but the income in tobacco taxes are 7 billion Kroner (1,5 billion dollars) and last but not the least: if you let the smokers smoke what they want the state will saved an unknown figure because they don't have to pay pension, because the smokers are expected to die 8 years earlier............ It's all about money!

I was more upset a smokers leaving their butts on the ground and not disposing them properly and the same goes for those car drivers who dump their ash trays on the ground and having to stop my sisters kids from putting the filthy stinking butts in their mouths .. and wanted some way to catch those people out!!!!!

Well, with all due respect, this is the dumbest thing I have ever read in my entire life. I am not sure what you were smoking when you wrote that. There must be a limit to having a phobia. First I thought it was some kind of sarcastic writing by a regular smoker. Anyway, keeping it short, I need to say it’s the processed pasta, sausages, bacon, TV dinners, canned tuna, canned tomato sauce, canned beans with pork lard, consumption of pills (for minor illness) and multi-vitamins that are the real reasons why people get most of the health problems ...which they seek treatment for at the expense of tax payers’ money. My ex Canadian landlady along with her husband who both abhor smoking utilize at least over 20000 dollars/year in their frequent visits to a free medical system. And they always eat and talk about healthy shit 24/7. A good tobacco( even with its notorious additives) is much more benign than all the preservatives people consume day in and day out in their daily food intake and then the only culprit they see is smoking for giving people cancer or crumbling the health system of a nation. Take a trip around the world, for example go to Turkey or Iran. You will find 80 year old chain smokers who are more healthy and fit than a 30 year old non smoking young North American man. When People talk about healthy Mediterranean diet and longevity, I guess they simply forget to mention Mediterranean chain smoking. If you are a smoker, you exercise, and eat good food in moderate quantity, then you have a better chance of living a longer life than a non smoker on junk diet. One of the reasons I lost interest in North America is because of this smoking phobia. When smoking is your main passion and integral part of your lifestyle and you have to pay 11 dollars for a pack of cigarettes of your choice, then there are other better places to live. Again, please do not smoke if you don’t like it but stop coming up with insane ideas to condemn it. Maybe making fewer babies can be a more productive idea. We will see fewer kids with cigarette buds in their mouth on the beach (although I have never seen one) and the health care system will benefit by having to deal with fewer deliveries and their follow ups. By the way I am not a big fan of baby makers, kids, and those who bash smoking, so I just reveal my bias. Again, with a qualification, I am simply responding to a written word and it is nothing personal. It’s just a point of view. I am well aware of the wide spread statistics, research findings, and anti smoking arguments.

how about stop littering your butts and smoke packets ...if you want to smoke then be responsible and put your crap in the bin and leave our streets, parks and beaches smoke butt free

I am responsible to the point where I pick up my buds in places where others are shy to do so. When outside, it is mostly my car where I smoke. Recently, freaks in Canada don't even let you sit outside the starbucks/other cafes and smoke. And if u are concerned about littering maybe u need to say a word or two about dog lovers who continue to take their creatures in parks where there are no dogs allowed and one cannot even sit on the grass and relax for a while. I see more dog shit on the streets and parks of Canada than cigs buds. Anyway, let’s conclude this discussion.

You enjoy your moorings with high fiber oatmeal and let others enjoy smoking if they are not invasive to you. Do not link smoking with crime even in its remote sense. It’s a primitive human habit.

i gave up smoking. and so glad i did, it not only stinks on people and makes u look old but its a waste of money. I still like one if im having a beer , must admit but the government are the bastards keeping the things going. they should make them illegal. make everyone give them up lol. then there would be heaps of tobbacco growers selling it just like weed making money. the government are criminals in my eyes to continue selling something that is proven to kill you and those around you. It is them that should be taken to court and made accountable and then the kids wouldnt be picking up the bloody things would they
