Physics For Dummies

Do you know what a "naked star" is?

A naked star is one with most of its gaseous exterior stripped away. Naked stars are valuable to scientists because they can get a clear look at the nuclear engines that keep stars burning bright.

Do you know how naked stars get to be revealed like that? It's due to close encounters with other stars.

I find something very human about that.

That's a fantastic image you've posted. I love stars and sciency things. If I had a spare bag of money I would buy a telescope to look into the sky at night. Great stuff!

This is an authentic photograph (actually, a composite of images) taken by NASA's Hubble Space Telescope in May 2003. It has been featured on magazine covers and websites and dubbed "The Eye of God" by the general public.

What it actually depicts is the Helix Nebula, a trillion-mile-long tunnel of glowing gases with a dying star at its center. Our own sun may look like this in several billion years.
