Rio de Janeiro

Rio de Janeiro

Probably this is the most famous city in Brasil and you can’t blame it. It is the most touristed part of Brasil and people hit the beaches even on the weekdays, rain or shine. The Copacabana is the longest beach but I would say one of the most dangerous sites in Rio. I was walking one evening with my friend along the shore of Copacabana when a teenage boy asked for a cigarette. As my friend and I don’t smoke we said we don’t have any, when he noticed we are gringas (foreigners), he took out a knife and pointed it out to my friend. Luckily, we were able to get away from him and we did not walk on the same place again.

Despite the dangers of the place, we still continued exploring the beaches of Rio but with caution this time. We have been to Flamengo beach, it is good for swimming, Ipanema, has great waves, Leblon, Botafogo and Ucra, it is small but nice.

We have been to the mountain peaks such as Sugar Loaf and Christ the Redeemer located at the Corcovado Mountain. We liked Corcovado Mountain because it is higher and the view is better on a clear sky. If you plan to visit Corcovado to get a good glimpse of the city, you should go there on a very fine weather and stay there from dusk till early evening.

The Botanic Gardens and the Zoo are good places to visit as well. The Cathedral is also amazing; it is designed rather extra ordinary from the outside and the inside. One thing I like about Rio is the food, they have good food and they have this thing they call “Pizza Buffet”. You will be paying a certain amount and they will be serving you all the flavours of pizza they have. They also have the Dulce Pizza which comes after you have had enough of the main Pizza dish. The Dulce Pizza is the most interesting because these are pizza slices, which have sweet toppings like chocolate, ice cream, banana and etc. I miss the food in Rio!!!

I had an airport stop in Rio de Janeiro once back in 1983 on my way to Argentina!! I was 21 years old, just a punk and all green around the ears!! I really enjoyed the Brazilian Portuguese I heard over the intercom every time they announced a flight was boarding. I recall how romantic the woman sounded. The coffee in Brazil is some of the best in the world. I decided to try an espresso and recalled how strong it was. I was up for a month after that. laugh

Sorry, I know, I don't know crap about Rio de Janeiro, but I was there for a few hours!! laugh laugh

That's just a little note to thank you for visiting Rio de Janeiro and yet to apologize for the bad behaviour of the brazilian young boys. Yes, we can find some of them everywhere there are 'gringos". sigh

Our rulers/politics had never cared about them. They (our governments) allowed the situation to reach such a point... I feel ashemed... Only now the Rio de Janeiro's governors decided to extinguish the drug trafficking, but lots of people have died even some innocent ones. Instead of spending million of dollars with Olympic Games, our government should spend it with more education, schools and work to the less priviledged people.frustrated

Well, anyway, next time you come to Brazil try to visit a genuine Brazilian family, I am sure that will make you to overcome and forget the bad incidents, since in general we are kind, gentle, cheerful and hospitable people.

I am really sorry. Unfortunately, there are bad people and politics in all over the world, not only in Brazil.

Brazil is a paraise, my paradise.love

Best wish. bouquet

Yes from what I hear about Brazil we should not make judgements
based on the odd bad experience. There is crime throughout the world. My understanding and experience from talking to people from Brazil is that Brazilians are for the most part a very friendly, good natured, honest and straight forward type capable of
great hospitality and warmth. Tourists anywhere in the world should take precautions and travel using smart procedures so as not to tempt the less fortunate of this world. Governments must take measures such that less fortunate people are looked after.
