i am half turkish and know istanbul very well.
istanbul is wonderful place to visit. it is big city contains every thing.
the most beautiful places in istanbul are posphure, Sultan Ahmad Cami (Mosque), Oludag mountain. try to get hotel or house at asian side (Anadolu) because it is residential area, less crowded and cheaper, but turism locations are at the european side. i advice you to go to Sabiha airport at asian side instead of Ataturk airport at european side. if you like coffeshops go to Baghdat Cadese (Badhdad Street), but you have to spend mutch money.
there are heritage market (capagli carci) but go only to watch not to buy, because you will find the same materials 30-60% cheaper out of this market.
if you like cats, go to Fatih Mosque, you will find thousands of fat cat and the people give them meat.
go to Ayoub Sultan Mosque, and watch the new married people going to there dressing wonderful clothes.
but i advice you, dont spend all your time in istanbul, there are better places to get rest and relax.
go to Yalova city, around 60 Km from istanbul and needs only 40 minutes by the boat, Termal city 35 Km. from Yalova, and boyouk ada 10 Km from istanbul coast.
those locations are cheaper, more quiet, comfortable, nature, kind people.
if you want beach and sun, go to antalya city (south of turkey).
the only disadvantage that Turkey became very expensive since around 4 years. more than some european countries.
if you want more details, ask me
I visited turkey in 1995. It was an wonderful country, friendly people, melodious turkish music every where, mixture of europe and asia, lots of muslim/ottoman heritage around etc. There is a regular visit to Turkey from my country for military trainings and others. I also heard it has gone quite expensive now a days.

Sorry but i had a few bad experiences, and it put me right off going back to Tukey.Hotel was dirty we had to be moved to another one, after alot of insistence, and putting pressure on the hotel manager,i was ripped off with perfume i bought on the street,i had the sample spray and thought it was the real stuff(my stupid fault i should of know better)but was the copy.My husband at the time got food posining, after a meal in what seemed to be a 'good'restaurant,he lost nearly a stone in one week and couldn't leave the hotel,in case of emergencies.I went souvenir shopping and the shop assistant wanted paid in English pounds,i handed him the money, but refused to give me my change,i threatened to call the Police, so he grabbed the item i had bought from my hand and gave all my money back, and told me to get out of the shop, which i did gladly. On the bus that same evening going back to the hotel, the driver was going fast down a mountain side road, and crashed trying to avoid the on coming traffic, thank God no one was hurt, but we were badly shaken up.We arrived in England the next day and the following morning my Dad died,so all in all it was a "Holiday from Hell"
