I never laid a finger on my kids and they have both turned out to be responsible and kind adults with great jobs, and never given me any major worries.
There are other ways to chastise children, but most people are just too lazy to think about and adopt them.
I agree with Jan. There are a variety of ways to discipline kids without hitting them. Granted there will be exceptions.
I was hit alot by my parents while growing up. Looking back, most of the time it was not because I was a bad kid but because they did not know how to control their temper.
Like Jan, I raised my son without hitting him with one exception. He was very young and reasoning with him was not an option. He kept trying to stick a screwdriver and other objects into electrical outlets. One swat on his diapered butt hurt his feelings enough to get him to listen.
He turned out great and has not learned that hitting is a solution to any problem.
