Dating sites, OR why Beck is popular and video games are cool.

One of the first things you learn about in advertising is appeal to the popular kids/people and there will be a trickle down effect. This does work and it is true. BUT there is another way of selling a product, appealing to social out casts and there will essentially be a trickle up effect. Beck was once a loser that no one liked, video games were for nerds, computer geek was actually used as an insult, and it used to be that only losers used dating sites.
Well not anymore, Beck has had a great carreer, every mtv persona has an xbox360 or ps2, ect..., "computer geek" is a term of the eighties, and there's a ton of cool people on the web.
Why and how did this happen? What can we learn from it? My theory is that the people selling these products, not only saw need to be filled, but also made their customers feel special and exclusive. It's supply and demand. Also when you make something exclusive, it appears to people that don't need a product, will actually feel they need it. "Oh no, all those guys that oogle me, are spending their time on ***! Must follow new trend...."
Nothing has really changed much about the products I mention above. It's the way people think about them that has changed the most.
Here is another point in case. Two guys go to a bar, they dress the same, order the same drinks, sit alone, and pretty much do the same stuff. Guy A however is sad and lonely and goes out to try and pick up. Guy B is confident, fun loving and just wants to chill out. Guy B will win hands down every time because people will think differently of him even though on the outside he is the same as guy A.
So even if you are a video game playing computer nerd name beck, you can have the success you want. Heck, I met a hottie in the mall playing sonic the hedge hog once, but that is for a different thread.
