It's not only the timbre of the voice, but also the manner of speaking: fast, slow, measured, clipped, accent, rambling, etc. , that can take one by surprise. I have found with some people here that I relate better with them in writing, while with others it's equal or better by phone. I'm not terribly particular about a woman's voice - my only dislikes are a "smoker's voice," though I prefer one that is sweeter in timbre versus brassy, I suppose - but I've noticed that voices are VERY important for most women (I'm guessing more important than for men, for largely psychological reasons; perhaps deep, growly voices signify "powerful, virile man," whereas gentler voices signify "sensitive, intelligent man," and the one you prefer has to do with what kind of man you prefer?).
I've had strange reactions to my voice. One woman gushed within the first few moments that she was "crushing" on my voice, which kind of surprised me. Another lady had a similar reaction. Then, just when I think my voice is all sexy and Zeus's gift to women, I talk to someone where I can almost hear the "turn-off!" switch being thrown in their reaction (I find it surprisingly easy to tell when that happens).
So it turns out, I'm finding somewhat to my surprise, that the sound of one's voice is yet another at least semi-critical factor in the personal chemistry equation. I actually never thought that in the past, so it's nice to learn something new at my age. I never would've believed that my voice alone could actually turn on or turn off someone (I always figured it would be *what* I said or otherwise conducted myself, how I looked, etc.).
Interesting...
