You are truly BeautifulEri to apologize when in my eyes no apology was needed! Just an opinion here!

I have felt discrimination in America by both Americans for being of Latin decent and from Latins for not knowing my native language! (I was born in America and only speak English!)

I have attempted to learn other languages but it is difficult for me.

I am envious of any one that can speak more than one language!

I shifted in the chair not really trying to read the magazine but trying to adjust to the numbness that had come over me as the doctor's words spilled out onto the floor. "I don't want to do this anymore!"


How can this be? He is only sixteen! I thought they were migraines, they run in our family you know. "I am sorry," the doctor says. Brain surgery and soon. All I can hear is the the word "No" in my head screaming and shouting. He gives us a few. This is going to fast, this is all too new.


I look at my son's beautiful face, he is being so strong and brave and he has the courage to smile and say "Mom, it will be ok!" What kind of mother am I to allow him, to comfort me? "This is the third opinion, mom." "It is not going to go away." Nothing would have changed if we didn't come here today.

I don't want to make these decisions, I don't want to do it alone! Five to seven hours in surgery. "Would you like to use a donor patch or take some bone from your son?" "Is there someone we can call?" "No , no one else at all."

"Mom, Mom, are you ok?" I have to get it together, I have to be strong. Why is the damn doctor taking so long? Off to the hospital for all of the tests. I watch him looking out the window as I drive. I think, just thank God he is alive.

December 14th, a day I will never forget. We all waited for the surgeon to take him away. He laughed and smiled and pretended. We all laughed and smiled and pretended. Then it was time go. "You may walk with us, but there is some things you should know."

As we walked the long hallway, his eyes began to glisten. "I am scared, mom." "I know, my love." "I know." The nurse had so many things to say but I could not hear her. I held his hand and I let him know, I would take his place if I could. Had I told him everything I should?

I kissed his head and squeezed him tight, I told him not to worry, everything would be alright. They pushed the gurney through the doors and took my life away with them. We waited and waited, two hours had passed. All I could do is keep looking through the glass.

Three and four, "I can't take this waiting anymore!" Finally, at five hours and forty-five minutes the angel in blue walked through. "The surgery went well, it was a success!" He smiled and instantly I knew, he had saved my life, my world, my heart. But he warned me the hard work was just about to start.

Many night's we are up because the headaches are bad. He has missed a whole year of high school, but we are not too sad. I am so grateful he has been given a chance to live. He can walk and talk and even play games. He is different now, but none of us, will never be the same.



Authors note:
My son Anthony was diagnosed with Arnold Chiari Malformation December of 2005. "Chiari," as the doctors called it is when the brain grows but the skull does not. His brain did not have any where to go except down into his vertebra. So his brain began to compress his spinal cord. The only "cure" was Brain surgery. Anthony surgery was a success but he will have life long complications. We are one of the lucky one's.
