As far as your friends go it seems like an ideal situation, one drinks the other bitches.

The drinker will ALWAYS make some excuse to drink. I can name about 12 right now, all good, all valid excuses and I dont even have a nagging wife. When hes ready to quiet he will or he will die. Anyone can make excuses to drink its more wrk to make an excuse not too.
When she gets sick and tired of it she will leave, or kill him, or he will get drunk enough to kill her.
Honsetly, I think your best to stay out of it and just let it run its course. When he hits bottom than be there, point him to rehab or AA or any professionals. Until that day comes it will just be a vicious circle and they will just feed off each other. best thing you can do is protect yourself and dont let him tike you down with him.

My brother sponcers a fishing trip just for the males in our family every year. We go to Canada and hang out for a week fishing, just guys and just family, now and then he invites a friend or two but its his call. We're away from everything, no TV or radios other than what you bring, cells dont work and the only phone is outside at the office.
We sit on the lake in a couple of boats, from dawn until dusk and catch waleyes all day and let them go....
ITS A BLAST!!!

I wont get into the whole disease, clincal diagnosise debate. Gilly Its called enabling. Spouces tend to help the drunks to keep drinking. Only by getting away from them do most realize it.
She needs to cut her loses and get away from him, he may die or he may recover, but until he decides its what HE wants to do fro HIMSELF, nothing will change he will drink until he dies and take as many people with him as he can. Its sad but true.
As for Dragonfly. Im a rcovering alcholic and Ive been sober for 20 years now. So yes it is possible...
