Giving up someone is a very hard thing to do. If you both agree that there is no chance of a further relationship, you must look into your heart and ask yourself is it time to "move on" There will always be some small little voice in the back of your mind that will question what ever you decide to do. It is never a good idea to go looking for another, most of the time you end up with the wrong person. In answer to your question, there is nothing wrong with looking or chatting on line, but you have to be comfortable with whatever you choose to do.
