Jokes aside, this would not work. The reason is that the subconscious mind will focus on the subject of the auto-suggestion, rather than make a distinction between the positive or negative point of the statement.

We must be very careful where we place our focus. It would have been better if the man had told himself.

God always answers our prayers, and the answer is always yes! But, we are not always aware of what we are really praying for, or where our focus is, or that we share a role in creation with God. Worrying is essentially the same thing as praying. So if we pray, and with our mouths we ask for something, but inside we are worried and afraid of a different result. We will likely get that result, because that is where our faith is focused.
Our conscious mind is little more than a filter, our subconscious mind, with its connection to the superconsciousness of the entire Universe, is where the true power of our unlimited potential dwells. So then we must be very deliberate, careful, selective about what we consciously decide to funnel into our subconscious.
In a personal example. My ex-wife will warn me how our daughter is like her, and cranky in the mornings, and hard to wake up, and she'll tell me that she doesn't want to go to school. I simply ignore her. When my daughter is with me, she always wakes up easily, smiling, and excited about school. Simply because that is what I expect her to do. I have a different expectation from my daughter, and I have a different reality.
If that sounds to simple for y'all, too impossible to be true, then that will be your reality....have fun with it.
