But you see, that is the beauty of history. They do not view the events with a jaundiced eye as you do, but look more at the big picture and the facts as it relates to the actual events going on today. The reason I think Bush will be well remembered is his work toward eradicating the terrorist movement so staunchly bent toward our destruction. That's JMHO and I'm not throwing it out there for a pissing match..just answering the thread as honestly as I know how.

In the same non-confrontational spirit I wonder if that is how he will be remembered. Arguably he will be remembered for fighting terrorism in a way that made the problem worse and undermined the USA's moral authority in the long run. The relationships between the US and the Afghan Mujehadin and the US - particularly the Bushes - and the Saudi regime may prove to be problematic when history finally gets written for this era. Perhaps history WILL be kinder to GWB but I genuinely don't believe it.

I DO think history will treat him well in the end. Unfortunately, we'll all be dead by then. Just look at Nixon, who was once reviled. Now historians paint a wholly different picture. JMHO

I think you have a small point here. I think the anti-Bush steam will dissipate after he is well gone but so will any pro-Bush feelings. I think he will be seen as at best mediocre and surrounded by unsavoury characters in office. As regards Nixon, I think his reputation has slightly improved with time but only slightly. Partly his intelligence shows through when compared with some subsequent holders of the office. I think it would be wrong to say the picture was wholly different though.....just a little less negative.

President Obama will be known for his excellent skills at reading a teleprompter. (note he never looks straight ahead, cuz there's no teleprompter to tell him what to say) Just a point of observation.

You may be right Indy or you may be wrong. An election is a choice. Given the available choice I think it is worth seeing if he has more to offer. Kerry wasn't a great option last time but he surely would have been better than more Bush! No point in damning people in advance - even McCain might be ok as President but he is too close to the current disasterous outfit. dunno

Well, I'm trying, among other things, to explore the anti-Bush and anti-America phenomenon.
To say that President Bush is an idiot or can't string a sentence together, we've heard this so many times, can't you put another record on the turntable?.
That kind of comment says something about the person making it, and nothing else. Think about it.
Sure President Bush stuttered and stumbled a bit at the beginning, but that's way in the past.
And my question was, will he be rated better in the historical context. Meaning by future generations who aren't even born yet.

I agree. The verbal slip-ups don't define the quality of his presidency any more than Reagan's skill with the autocue defined his. Bush's lack of quality is to be found in any number of other places. Iraq, the economy, pandering to special interests, appointing dodgy people to high office, condoning torture, reducing America's status in the world both in terms of power and reputation. etc etc. professor
