I've only known one electrician who worked on films. She made A LOT of money but it was seasonal and she couldn't do it physically after awhile so she became a teacher which is how I know her. Of course knowing people helps in every industry even in mine. I'm not arguing that. But I have a long list of people which I gave you (and more than those) who got in through talent, extremely hard work and working their way up. Perhaps in England which is a small country with a much smaller film industry it is different. If you believe that there is no way in then you are wasting your time and energy. I am not being rude or unkind but simply realistic. Why are you doing it if you really think you can't get in? Now screenwriting I know something about. My ex-SIL at CAA knew how much I love to read and spend most of my free time doing so. So she got me a little side job (paid a lot and yeah it was through someone I knew) reading scripts for CAA. See, they get tons of unsolicited scripts and they really do go through them. They hire people to slog through them and say whether they are worth a further look. Sure many don't read unsolicited manuscripts but just as many do. And most of them are crap but there are a few really well-written interesting ones.
hi LACali] !
i think you're getting me wrong love the " who do you know in the world of film " question was'nt aimed at you LACali !... thats what they asked me !
i had'nt even finnish telling you that story yet that led to me deciding to become a filmmaker instead of a film lighting gaffer !
i was in the elecrical workshop on and off one day a week on work experience repairing the equipment with free of charge with no pay for well over a year just trying to get a break into the film industry because i never knew anybody !
if you're really interested in stories i'll tell ya girl ..and thats after getting on with everybody in the workshop !
i got a break when a young apprentice came into stores where i was packing the shelves with another guy and said " blah blah blah production company need 3 electricians to work free of charge to do a pop video for 3 days, hard work long hours 3 days straight 12 hours the first day ...11 hours the 2nd day and maybe 14 hours the 3rd day !... but if they like you they pay you for the other pop videos that they've got coming up !
i shouted " I'LL DO IT ..YES PLEASE " and thats how i started meeting these other electricians gaffers cameramen directors actors writers producers ..got on with those people got recommended and started getting paid and more work as a lighting electrician !
i was going round dropping names all the time saying that these people are all great freinds of mine to get more work out of strangers EHEH ! EHEH ! EHEH ! and thats just has an electrician
when it comes to making films acting directing producing and getting funding for projects its the same thing girl
one thing i hate is THE WAY THE HOLLYWOOD STAR SYSTEM WORKS
you can be a brilliant actor that can play a brilliant roll in a film ..but producers who's putting up the money to make the film will insist that that roll goes to bruce willis samuel l jackson wesley snipes john travolta or or other well known names ..why ?
BECAUSE THEY SAY THAT THEY'RE BANKABLE ..BECAUSE PEOPLE KNOW WHO THEY ARE !
there are great actors and actresses that you and i have never even seen or heard of yet because they haven't been given a break based upon
WHO THE AUDIENCES KNOW !
its got nothing to do with how educated , qualified or talented you are , or letting things get in your way !...its all about meeting the right people ...getting to know them ..being able to flourish as a creative person with them..whilst being your your real..self getting notice and then be given a chance to prove to the rest of the world how good you are darling !!
