The overwhelming majority of these patients neither require nor engage in smoking marijuana as a viable treatment option.

If you have valid reasons for condoning marijuana use, then by all means present your argument, or even just chime in with your "Yea, I love pot" mantra.
But to exploit the pain and suffering of others to justify your drug habit is nothing less than shameful. scold

to keep the prices artificially high

That may well be. I don't know how much these farmers get from the government, but I'm guessing it must be a substantial amount if it outweighs what they would get for selling the corn.
It's not like there's a shortage of people who want to buy corn, so from the farmer's point of view at least, it can't have anything to do with supply and demand.

I wouldn't be so sure.
A lot of farmers here are paid by the government to burn their excess corn crops.
I have no clue why.
But it's tons and tons of good healthy corn being burnt every year.
Seems to me it's a waste of food that could either feed the hungry or propell a car either way. Some kind of use would have to be better than just burning it.

If anyone has a clue why the government pays these guys to burn it, I'd love to hear a reasonable explanation.
dunno

For anyone interested in the Mayan Doomsday Prophecy, I highly recommend the History Channel's Doomsday series. I don't think it's available yet for purchase, because the last 2 episodes haven't aired yet, but it will probably be available as a box set.

It goes into a lot of detail on the Mayan culture and their calendar, and it compares the Mayan beleif system with that of the Aztecs and Native Americans, all of which have/had a circular calendar in which civilizations end and new ones are reborn. According to this train of thought, it's speculated that if the Mayan culture had survived, they would have also predicted a new birth of a civilization to replace those who demised in 2012.

Interesting stuff to say the least.

oh but that sounds like a nice way of living

I preder old stuff too, especially wood - but I would love to experience the Amish way of life - I think I could take to that way of life like a duck to water - but I might miss the phone and internet

I live about 2 hours from the heart of Ohio's Amish country, and some of their culture trickles down this way. I think the closest Amish family to us is about 20 minutes away.

We've often considered living more like them.
If I fell in love with an Amish or Mennonite man, I'd convert without hesitation, to be able to marry into such a wonderful people.
I think I'd miss the electricity for the first few months, but then I'd get over it fairly quickly.
It's amazing how well human beings adjust to an absence of technology when there is a strong presence of nature to replace it.

exactly but I bought a toastie maker from asda/walmart a while since and it cost less than the equivalent of $10, it broke a few months down the line and they were even cheaper in the shop when I went looking at prices again - I wanted to buy one with a better catch and would have been happy to pay a little more - but they didnt have any and still dont - this was months ago - I refuse to but one on principle.

Our household boycots Made in China products, as much as possible. I won't say we never buy cheap, because I won't let my smoke alarms go without batteries just because the only batteries are made in China, and we can never be sure where the parts are made.

Since we've been doing so, we've found some innovative ways of keeping costs down. We buy a lot of stuff from Amish country. It's all hand-made and without the use of power tools. We shop Farmer's Market. We'll take an hour ride to go to an auction deep in the mountains to get used quality stuff. It might be 40 years old, but a lot of it holds up better than the flimsy Wal-mart stuff.

I don't understand the disposable society mentality.

Anyone who has ever lived or worked extensively on a farm, or hauled their own water, or built their own homes, would (it seems to me) have a deeper seeded understanding of the personal satisfaction that comes from a bit of hard work.
And that hard work usually lasts longer in the end.

Seems to make more sense to put in a lot of effort in the beginning to have something long-lasting,
than to have to redo, repurchase, and replace constantly.

dunno

"Heart Disease Won't Quit Until You Do"
and
"FreshStart - A Participant's Guide to Stopping Tobacco Addiction"
both by the American Cancer Society.

Not quite as interesting as some books I've read in my life.
But they may help me live a bit longer to read some more interesting ones down the road.

My friend and I have this conversation often.

He's running about yelling "the sky is falling" because he believes the economy is plummeting, a depression is upon us, and the stock market is about to crash.

I sit back saying "I won't believe a word of it until I quit seeing a generation of 14 year olds walking around with an iPod on their hip, and iPhone in their ear, and brand name shoes on their feet."

Yeah. It's part of the campaign trail to promote Hillary.
And I understand why the party would send Bill here instead of Hillary. This is a somewhat backward redneck sexist town, so the majority of the constituents here are more open to hearing what a man has to say.

I don't much care to hear Bill Clinton speak, but it still would have been sensible to at least give a town some details about a campaign arrival rather than expect we're all just going to drop everything to go running and listen to him.

If I had known in advance, I may have taken my son down to hear him speak. My son is just getting to an age where he is learning about politics and forming his own opinions instead of mimicing mom's opinions. He agrees with some things Hillary promotes. Since politics is just part of life, it would have been a small educational experience to take him to hear a politician speak.

Seems like a waste of campaign money to send a speaker to a town, but not let the town folk know he's coming.

My town.

He's down at the college, and virtually no one is showing up on time because the local democratic party failed to inform the town that he was going to be here, or where he would be, or what time he'd be here.

rolling eyes

People are getting ready for church and saying things like "Is he really here? I thought that was a rumor."

Do u feel u have ever had a truly successful relationship?

Yes. Quite a few of them.

When I was a 15 year old girl, I had relationships that were successful for a 15 year old girl. Same when I was 20, and 25, and so on.

I've had relationships that have taught me about myself and taught me about communication, and the opposite sex, and relating to others, and compromise, and friendship....

Just because something didn't last forever, doesn't mean it wasn't a success.

This can't be proven or disproven.
It's a blog.
It's one person's opinion.
It in no way applies to all men, or all women.
It's not even true or false.
It is one little person on a great big internet blogging their opinion.

I tried to watch The Vagina Monologues, but I couldn’t endure it long enough to even get halfway through.
I felt a lot of the substance was better suited for private conversation rather than the public stage.
I also believe a lot of the issues addressed were drown by the method of presentation. “In your face” tactics like this, rarely work to get across an important point to those who need to hear it. When people choose to use a great deal of obscenity and shock value, they put the focus on themselves instead of their words. The message is overridden by the messenger.
Those who enjoy this type of presentation are already aware of the point.
It becomes a classic case of preaching to the choir.

I don’t reply to every message. And I don’t consider it rude at all.

I also sometimes choose to not answer my phone and let the answering machine pick up. I sometimes choose to not answer my front door when people knock. I often choose not to answer postal mail that I receive in my mail box outside.
Just because someone chooses to solicit me for time, attention, dates, money, whatever… it does not obligate me to reply.

If I spent my life sitting down and replying to each and every piece of correspondence that ever came my way,
I would have no time to live my life.

I see a lot of women saying:
"Looks matter to EVERYONE."
"Anyone who says looks don't matter is just trying to be PC."
"Anyone who says looks don't matter is a liar."

I really wish that these women would learn to speak for themselves and quit generalizing.

Looks do not matter to everyone.
Looks do matter to a lot of people.
Looks do not matter to some people.

I have expanded on my views of physical appearance and my definition of beauty in numerous other threads, bringing in lengthy issues of blindness, disfigurement, burn victims, exposure to diversity, etc...
and I have said countless times:
Looks truly do not matter to me.
And looks do not matter to some people.
And looks do matter to some people.

I do not say this because I am trying to be politically correct.
I am not saying this because I am a liar.
I am saying this because it is true.

If looks matter to you, then say so.
But please quit this assumption and generalization that looks matter to everyone.
When you say "Looks matter to everyone." YOU are the one lying, because your statement is not true.
