trish123: Im not even saying necessarily socialism - just something a little more balanced. Do you realise that the gap between the rich and poor continues to grow - that isnt right - some are obscenely rich while millions starve - tell me that is ok

Why do the rich get rich and why do the millions starve? dunno

Personally, I admire most rich people. Provided they got it honest.

Xtabentun: Good manners!
Isn't the musslim community one of the strongest, though? I mean, Middle east, Far east, Africa....probably the pressure is equally high.
dunno

trish123: I dont see that - McCarthyism blighted Socialism along with communism but few have actually researched the reality of the ideology - more people actually get a better deal from this way of like and thats why the Plutocrats employed 'their' media to blacken it - see through the veils you people - please - people are starving in a world of plenty........

Then you would need a 1 world government to address the "world" problems. I don't see that happening. dunno

Xtabentun: They are cheating, they should wash 5 times
Thanx Indy, interesting insight!

My gripe is that there's a strong effort to keep church and state separated...but we're sucking up to select religeous groups. There was quite an uproar here for awhile.

And no, I didn't use the footbath as a urinal. laugh

I like the idea of individualism and the ability of one to succeed based on his/her efforts...and not what the government can do for me.

Xtabentun: hahaha....
Honestly, when they pray, they just take the shoes off, no need to wash the feet ( meaning not a religious request to do that....might be an environmentally need , but that's something else all together).
They are required to wash before praying....but not specific footbaths.....usually they was their faces
It just sounds like the community is taking advantage of the hosting city.

In Indiana, state and many local government offices close in observance of Good Friday. Public hospitals commonly offer chapels for people of various faiths to pray and find solace. State government employs chaplains to provide spiritual guidance in various settings.

The public is asked to underwrite the expense of these accommodations, and others, for two basic reasons. One, such steps bow to common public practices, even those that are religious in nature. Two, ignoring the public's needs, solely because they touch upon religious issues, would create unnecessary burdens.

In that context, it's reasonable that the Indianapolis Airport Authority is considering the installation of foot baths in two restrooms to accommodate Muslim taxi drivers' religious needs. The sinks would be installed, one in a men's restroom, another in a women's restroom, at the airport's new midfield terminal, which is scheduled to open next year. The estimated cost of buying and installing the sinks is between $800 and $1,200, a blip in the terminal's $1.07 billion construction budget.

More than 100 Muslim cab drivers wash their feet three times a day at the airport as part of a ritual called ablution. Many of them now perform the ritual cleansing in restroom sinks intended for hand washing. Some fellow taxi drivers are unhappy, and understandably so, to share a sink with another person's feet.

Other drivers use water bottles in the parking lot to complete the washing, but that's not a viable solution in cold weather.

A few Christian leaders have objected to the proposal, citing a supposed violation of the First Amendment. But if state and city governments can make Good Friday a holiday for their employees, and that policy has so far withstood legal challenge, then why shouldn't the Airport Authority be able to accommodate certain religious practices?

StressFree: Similar incidents have happened in Sweden in the schools and in the workplace...too lazy to ring up some sources right now....maybe later...

We've had lawsuits where Muslims refuse to ring up liquor in a grocery store and filed suit.

My view...if you don't want to be around liquor, find another job.

That's what I understood too , but I thought you're joking!
They don't have them in the Arab countries ...strange to request them outside. Praying spaces...makes more sense, but footbaths???

I heard that they were standing in bathroom sinks washing their tootsies....and breaking the sinks.
D'oh!

Now that's an opinion. I'm sure the Soviet and Chinese governments think they are following the model properly. dunno

In a related/non-related story:

We have another story of Muslim workers refusing to wear their company mandated uniforms because it is offensive to their religion. This time it is Mission Foods, which makes tortillas. Mission Foods in Minnesota has been accused of religious intolerance for requiring six female Muslim workers to wear uniforms. Imagine the horror. The uniforms include pants and a shirt, but the Muslim women are upset because they feel the pants are too revealing.

Because they refused to wear the uniforms, these six Muslims workers were fired. That, of course, is the proper way to handle this. Naturally this meant that the Minnesota chapter of CAIR had to get involved. Valerie Shirley, a spokeswoman for CAIR says that wearing tight fitting pants is like being naked to these women. Now CAIR is fighting to get their jobs reinstated.

Here's a concept ... these jobs do not belong to these Muslim women. The jobs belong to the employer. If the women don't want to wear the uniform, go find a job that will allow you to wear all of the loose-fitting Muslim garb. These companies should not have the bend the rules just to appease six Muslim women who are too afraid that they might show off what they've been hiding under all that clothing. There is a reason these companies do not like loose-fitting clothing. It's about safety. It's not like the company was asking them to come to work in bikinis. Nobody forced them to work for this tortilla company. Go somewhere else. It's as simple as that.

Xtabentun: What do you mean?

It's pretty much self explanatory. The Airport Authority had footbaths installed for the convenience of Muslim taxi cab drivers and at their request.

With the ACLU pushing the separation of church and state every chance they get, you'd have thought they'd jump all over that one. However, they tend to bash Catholics and Protestants...and stand up for Muslims. Still trying to figure that one out? confused
