I love:

The smell of fish and chips but I never eat them. (Maybe that's why the smell is so alluring?) and roasting chicken.

Freshly bathed babies.

Jasmine.

Fresh herbs

Books.

My hair when I've just washed it.

Not life-changing or remotely interesting to anybody except me, but I've been invited to review educational books and resources for students and teachers of English.

I don't even get paid for it! I will however receive free books and have an interesting addition to my cv.

My mum phoned a while ago to see If I'd heard the news. Nothing on the Russian news, unless I missed it, but I've checked it out on the internet.

Very sad.

Formula for failure; trying to please everyone.

It has done us no good to set standards we could not reach. On many occasions, we adopted goals that couldn't be reached from the beginning. We allowed our identities to become tied in with pleasing people. If we suffered rejection, we collapsed into a quivering heap. Each time we wrapped ourselves up in a package for someone to pass judgment on, we set ourselves up for failure.

Pat you think too much!

When are we going to hear what Pat actually thinks and does rather than what he reads. If we all followed platitudes like this, life would be an eternal paradise and nobody would be here!

In the past I tried to please everybody until I realised it's not healthy and was draining me. It is nice though to put a smile on someone's face.

Oh c'mon Gilly!

British knighthoods are supposed to be awarded on merit for exceptional achievement or service to the country. How on earth can you seriously think that somebody like Jade is worthy?

As for the news about her cancer, it's very sad indeed and the way the news was publicised has really plumbed the murky depths of reality tv.

She actually received a live recorded telephone call from her doctor whilst taking part in Big Brother India, telling her that her tests were positive!

Unbelievable! People actually want to watch this crap?

So so!

I love this expression. It's what students of English say to me constantly when they really don't want, or can't elaborate.

Call me pedantic and criticise me for being so, but I have to say it, and I intend to carry doing so........"What ARE mind Games?" Mind games are plural not singular!

I teach English and have borne the brunt in the past for criticising native English speakers for grammar, punctuation etc, so I desisted, but I can't bear it any longer. I have to speak out on behalf of lovers of the English language. It drives me crazy.

As for the question, mind games are, in my opinion, only perpetrated by people who aren't really seeking a true relationship, so choose to play games. It's not about people who don't think, the opposite in fact, they are often very clever people who are able to spot a weakness in somebody and exploit it.

Sorry for the rant folks, but it was long overdue and now I feel much better.

Pat, you know just sometimes there are times when one person has not done anything wrong.

In these cases, why waste time pondering "what did I do wrong?" It's a classic case of shouldering the blame when it's not justified and that makes the healing so much longer.

I know, I did it, and made myself ill thinking about what could I have done to prevent this, but at the end of the day I realised I had not done anything wrong. That's when I recovered.

By chance, do you have relatives in Denmark?

Now I know this isn't going to sway your opinion of Denmark to a more positive position, but did you know that Denmark was the only occupied country during world War 11 to actively resist the deportation of the Jews?

One courageous act, which included the King of Denmark BTW, was that everybody, regardless of religion, sewed the yellow star onto their clothing when the German occupiers insisted on this for purposes of identification.

I don't seek perfection either because it doesn't exist, but we are, in general, more picky, nay, confident and with hindsight, as we get older.

I've found the same on my travels. Tourists or foreigners who don't speak the language are easy game.

In the markets here in Russia I find being a woman helps if you approach a stall with a male serving. You have to play them at their own game!

If I go anywhere here where an admittance fee is required I have to try to speak as fluently as possible, which is difficult as my Russian is appalling, or try to persuade a native friend to accompany me. I have to say though, it's only here in Russia where I have found such blatant overcharging for tourists or non- natives.

Seriously though, if one makes an effort at learning the language and being friendly (if your stay is longer than a two week holiday) there shouldn't be a problem.

We're just not willing to settle that's it plain and simple.

When you get to 40 or over and maybe have been single for a while, experience and having the confidence to be independent means we don't have to take the first offer that comes along.

Hard to please? No, it's about knowing what we want or need in order to have a successful relationship. If that means we deny ourselves opportunities then so be it. Better to be alone than waste time when you're over 40 on empty relationships.

That applies to men too BTW.
