I can't say that it has been a pleasant experience overall, but it has been an interesting one.

I don't think that there is really any point (for me ) in staying in a place where someone indicates a cockroach, twists and insists that it is a ladybird and is openly supported by her 'straight shooting' buddies while the rest of you (many of whom are intelligent enough to see what's going on) either send messages that are so quiet and cryptic as to be easily ignored or do nothing at all.
Edmund Burke said: 'All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.'
Well, enough is enough...........

I am going to leave my personal correspondence open for a week in order to tie up any loose ends but then I will leave you all to play in (or be an audience to) this poor excuse for a forum.

And btw Lagoona, gentlemen don't enjoy watching women having mud-fights, not even when they're stupid women.

Good-bye.
Good-luck.
I cannot understand how such an uncontroversial topic as ladybirds degenerate into such a ridiculous bun fight or worse!!!

Oh yes indeed, when I wail, my faithful followers come a`runnin`! All the way to Switzerland, over the freezing alps, thru the Black Forest, over the rivers, they fly their trusty brooms......

Funny thing ... you started off here as a realy bright sounding intelligent lady, a peacemaker type.... And now it seems you found yourself your very own slippery slope and are enjoying yourself tremendously?

When you use CAPITAL letters, it means you are screaming, did you know?

I say it is very sensible to treat lady, birds, and ladybirds and any combination thereof, with respect applause

Whatever employment one does is honorable ... whether you`re a research scientist, cleaning lady, construction worker, civil engineer.....etc etc ....

Not Everyone can aspire to the most elite jobs, and some jobs are more suited to certain individuals than to others ...... if you happy in your work and do the work to your best ability, then what more can you ask?

To talk derogatively about certain necessary jobs like garbage collection is very spiteful and mean towards those workers. In most cases the menial work is done by people who have not yet learned the language of their new country...... I know of some of these workers who are trying to overcome this hurdle in order to further their studies in the future.

... Who is the superior? .... I should imagine it would be the person with either the most experience in that job, or the highest qualification?
Hi Smoky. You are right of course. I brought up the example of garbage collection not to be derogatory but to make a point that it is utter nonsense that refugees are taking the jobs of the locals. These are the jobs that few of the locals want to do because, as you say, locals are usually better qualified academically and so do not have to take on such jobs for the reasons that you explained. It is not a question of superiority but a question of expediency. That is why it is nonsensical to make sweeping statements about who's taking whose jobs.

A woman takes a lover home during the day while her husband is at work.
Her 9-year old son comes home unexpectedly, sees them, and hides in
the bedroom cupboard to watch. The woman's husband also comes home.
She puts her lover in the cupboard, not realising that the little boy is in
there already.
The little boy says, "Dark in here."
The man says, "Yes, it is."
Some more jokes

Boy - "I have a football."
Man - "That's nice."
Boy - "Want to buy it?"
Man - "No, thanks."
Boy - "My dad's outside."
Man - "OK, how much?"
Boy - "$250"
In the next few weeks, it happens again that the boy and the lover
are in the cupboard together.
Boy - "Dark in here."
Man - "Yes, it is."
Boy - "I have football boots."
The lover, remembering the last time, asks the boy, "How much?"
Boy - "$750"
Man - "Sold."
A few days later, the boys' father says to the boy, "Grab your boots
and football, let's go outside and have a game of soccer.
The boy says, "I can't, I sold my ball and boots."
The father asks, "How much did you sell them for?"
Boy -"$1,000."
The father says, "That's terrible to overcharge your friends like
that. That is way more than those two things cost. I'm going to take you to
church and make you confess."
They go to the church and the father makes the little boy sit in the
confession booth and he closes the door.
The boy says, "Dark in here."
The priest says, "Don't start that sh*t again. You're in my cupboard now

Thank you, quite informative i say Madam, however this is not a question of compassion and the lot, of course I have compassion by all means, but it starts with my people the Maltese and I'm quite sure you can't argue to that, charity begins at home they say and it should be, we do not have enough bread to go around feeding outsiders here. Besides I DO NOT and Will Not let my children be ruled by some illegal immigrant in the future

HAPPY NEW YEAR DEAR.
I think you are blowing the issue out of proportion and not treating it logically. Your point about being ruled by illegal immigrants as you call them is irrelevant and totally lacks logic.

I was totally sure that the Maltese had suffered in some way like everyone else in ww2.

I just thought it was inappropriately smug to boast that the island had not been occupied when so other countries had and had had such losses they were mentioned in the count........countries that got very little help from ANY allies.................

Anyway, that was a long time ago.........and in 6,000 years it will be an even longer time ago.

No offense intended towards the people of Malta,by the way.I hope that's understood.
Cheers,RK!
No offence taken. And I can also understand where you are coming from. Malta was thankfully (arguably!) spared Nazi occupation and the suffering that other occupied countries had to endure under the Nazi regime. I am sure that it is that suffering and oppression under the Nazis is what you are referring to.

I totally agree. We Brits were also migrants - the difference is we were greedy and wanted more than just a job. Eventually host nations got rid of us.....we have not yet recovered from the shock!

oh, you must be the minister of foreign affairs?
Anyway, one more white, one less white what difference does it make?

But i think she should go to an old european country, where people have vested the EU flag long time ago. They are less paranoid about the NON- EU people.
When you've waited so long to get something, when you finally do, it hurts to see others just passing by!

What gives the impression that Maltese are paranoid about non-EU people? confused Apologies but did not understand your final sentence...help

In response to:
I complain!

I'm not even Maltese, but I think it's unfair for 'non EU tall skinny fair-haired dolly birds' to illegally take jobs from 'short dumpy dark-haired Maltese ones'!

If you have a policy where you encourage foreigners to fill vacancies where you have a shortfall (often in highly skilled jobs) that's fine, but it's not fair for people who might not be paying tax and are employed on the black market (so the employer isn't paying the relevent taxes on them either)to take away jobs that local people want but can't get because they've been priced out of the market illegally.

However, in the UK I am all for EU former Eastern European youngsters competing in the job market. They are well-educated and prepared to work hard to achieve their ambitions; our home-grown youngsters need to adopt the same attitude for success!

What matters is whether wealth is being created and then distributed to lazy-arsed people like me. People on the black market are just not contributing to my welfare and out to have their cute little bottoms smacked!

P.S. Happy New Year!
I agree. But the issue here was not the taking of jobs per se. That is only a diversion. There needs to be consistency. If people didn't complain about Caucasians taking jobs, the same line of thinking should hold for blacks. The issue is racism pure and simple. As to black market, I can assure you there are more Maltese citizens working the black market than any foreigners.

RACISM, RACISM, RACISM!

So what? i really feel sorry for those young parents...are you really teaching your kids that the colored(i mean variety but not white) people are taking jobs, are bad and so on? The world of is full of different people...raising them to feel uncomfortable to that is...RURAL!

I have no issue with any people coming to Malta. The Maltese themselves are a nation of migrants. There are thousands of Maltese emigrants all over the world. And most of them emigrated for economic reasons not because of oppression or war. So it is very hypocritical for some Maltese to then turn around and oppose immigration on humanitarian grounds. Embracing diversity is beneficial to the Maltese.

Very frustrating! The barrier here is the skin colour. We have loads of immigrants in Malta from Eastern Europe - nobody complains that they are taking the jobs! We had loads of refugees from the Balkans during the war in ex-Yugoslavia. Nobody complained! Bigotry raises it's ugly head again.

Best wishes to all. Here are a few thoughts for the year.

Advice for 2008...
Don't date because you are desperate.
Don't marry because you are miserable.
Don't have kids because you think your genes are superior.
Don't philander because you think you are irresistible.
Don't associate with people you can't trust.
Don't cheat. Don't lie. Don't pretend.
Don't dictate because you are smarter.
Don't demand because you are stronger.
Don't sleep around because you think you are old enough and know
better.
Don't hurt your kids because loving them is harder.
Don't sell yourself, your family, or your ideals.
Don't stagnate.
Don't regress.
Don't live in the past. Time can't bring anything or anyone back.
Don't put your life on hold for possibly Mr/Mrs Right.
Don't throw your life away on absolutely Mr /Mrs Wrong because your
biological clock is ticking.
Learn a new skill.
Find a new friend.
Start a new career.
Sometimes, there is no race to be won.
Only a price to be paid for some of life's more hasty decisions.
To terminate your loneliness, reach out to the homeless.
To feed your nurturing instincts, care for the needy.
To fulfil your parenting fantasies, get a puppy.
Don't bring another life into this world for all the wrong reasons.
To make yourself happy, pursue your passions and be the best of what
you can be.
Simplify your life.
Take away the clutter.
Get rid of destructive elements: abusive friends, nasty habits, and
dangerous liaisons.
Don't abandon your responsibilities but don't overdose on duty.
Don't live life recklessly without thought and feeling for your family.
Be true to yourself.
Don't commit when you are not ready.
Don't keep others waiting needlessly.
Go on that trip. Don't postpone it.
Say those words. Don't let the moment pass.
Do what you have to, even at society's scorn.
Write poetry.
Love Deeply.
Walk barefoot.
Dance with wild abandon.
Cry at the movies.
Take care of yourself. Don't wait for someone to take care of you.
You light up your life.
You drive yourself to your destination.
No one completes you - except YOU.
It is true that life does not get easier with age. It only gets more
challenging.
Don't be afraid.
Don't lose your capacity to love.
Pursue your passions.
Live your dreams.
Don't grow old. Just grow YOU!
