Funguy, please don't consider this a personal attack.

You suffer from the same blindness most empiricists suffer from. "I haven't tested it, so it must not be real." The Drake equation makes many suppositions. It is all based on estimates of things we cannot measure and cannot know. The actual number of stars, the actual number of planets, the actual length of time any given civilization is in existence. There is a statement somewhere in one of the responses or links, "Even if they existed, it would be too expensive to travel here." It should be pointed out that that is by our standards only. Less than 150 years ago, they would have said, "Even if there was life on the moon they couldn't get here. What would they do, throw water in front of the boat so they could sail this far?" The assumption is only a minimally advanced level of development beyond ours with such statements. We might miss intelligent life that is pre-radio. (Given the narrowness of our current search, we may miss many planets right now that actually do have radio.)

Some of us are hopeful that a truly advanced civilisation beyond ours would still be listening, even if they stopped broadcasting into the ether so many years ago that their signals passed by while the dinosaurs ruled. Some of our hopeful that their energy techonology has advanced beyond basic petrochemical reaction engines to something we haven't dreamed of, and that it won't bankrupt their system to travel space. Some of us hope that a sufficiently advanced system would have advanced beyond Einstiein's unfinished Unified Field Theory, completing it and searching for the next step. Was it Heinlein that said any sufficiently advanced technology appears as magic? Maybe we have seen magic. I'm not going to disallow it because I can't measure it yet.

Statistically? Statistically, Funguy, there are so many possibilities that you're into infinite monkey range. However, realistically, there are a lot of variables that cannot be fulfilled. The number of possible planets in the universe as it is known today still stands in the bilions. The probability that there is no life on any of them except this one can't actually be a number because of unknown parameters. But statistically, out of all those planets, it would be more of a fluke if we were alone than not.

I haven't scanned through all 10 pages of this thread, but BND... I'm going to have to pick a bone with you.

Of COURSE UFOs exist. The question isn't do they exist, but what are they. A UFO is an unidentified flying object. Anything that flashed past you in the air you didn't recognize is a UFO until you identify it. (All I'm really picking at here is the terminology.) If you're walking in the park and something buzzes past your head and you jerk, going "What the hell was that?!?" Well, it was a UFO. Might have been a bee. Might have been a Frisbee. lol.

UFOs fall into a lot of different classes. UFOs that appear to be possibly natural phenomena, UFOs that question intelligent control (which might include but not be limited to top-secret military projects), or UFSs that question extraterrestrial origin.

I was married for over 25 years, Bonnie. I didn't take it lightly. I took it seriously enough that I really DID consider ending my life before ending the marriage. It would take a small book to describe everything that was wrong, and all the things I tried to do to make it work. But it all boils down to we couldn't meet each other's needs. Period. And there was no point in two unhappy people in the world, when they could search for happiness.

What is the deal with all the cheating? Is monogomy so hard? What is it about committment that people dont understand? What is wrong with people that they find it so hard to be faithful to the one that they by their own will CHOSE to be faithful to? These people were so lucky that someone loved them enough to commit to them and spend the rest of their lives devoted to them, and they throw it away like it means nothing. It truely disgusts me.
Sometimes, Bonnie, you discover that the way they love you isn't the same way you thought they loved you.

I wrote a quip awhile back. I said, "When they tell you that they don't think you feel about them the way they want you to, don't tell them they're stupid if they can't tell. It validates their point."

I tried a lot of things to work on my marriage, but when I hit the point I honestly said I'd rather be dead than spend another 20 years like that, I knew it was time to leave, to save my own life. I was that unhappy.

I still have some feelings for my ex. Can't spend 25+ years with someone and not have feelings. I would still like to see her find what she wants in life, but not at the expense of most of what I want in life. We just reached a point where it became clear we either wouldn't or couldn't meet the needs of each other.

"...destroy all of his ballistic missiles with a range greater than 150 kilometers; ..."

And how many scuds were launched in the second Gulf war? Oh, that's right. He pretty much used all the working ones when he had them. In the first one. Oops.

I know... let's find out what they did with the body and hang him again! Maybe then our stated objective of making Saddam comply with the UN resolutions will be fulfilled and we can come home.

I might add that since Jesus was an observant Jew, and in the more orthodox Jewish synagogues it is considered wrong to create "graven images," there is every good chance he would have requested or even not allowed an actual rendering of his appearance.

Gilly, there are no renderings, color or otherwise, that actually profess to depict Jesus of Nazareth that date to the time he was alive.

I do believe that his different appearance would have accounted for part of the reason he was easier to accept as different than normal men of the time. Why it was easier to accept that he was the Son of God. I believe that it was difficult to actually point to him and say, "Why do you believe him? He's just like everyone else!" In the letter to Tiberius Cesar from Pilate he wrote "What a contrast between Him and His bearers with their black beards and tawny complexions!"

I believe historically Jesus of Nazareth was sentenced to crucifixion (which was not an uncommon punishment in the Roman-controlled Middle East).

I will not say whether or not I profess to believe he was the Messiah.

I'm afraid I'm another of those shallow ones. Looks do matter to me. But it's not a look I can quantify.

I've been attracted to ladies some thought "different" looking. And some women who are considered beautiful by Hollywood standards or the celeb mags, I wouldn't date on a dare.

And while I have to be attracted to her looks one some level, if her personality is absolutely incompatible with mine, it wouldn't matter how good I thought she looked.

Afternoon, all. Or whatever time of day you read this, I hope it is going well for you.

I may have to stop in from time to time. This seems like a much more positive and intelligent group than I have been running into in other forums.

(I'm relatively new to CS... just a few days now. Haven't looked around all that much. )

There actually are a couple of descriptions of Jesus of Nazareth (and historical proof that there was such a person), in writings contemporary to the period. One such description was in a letter from Pontius Pilate. Both letters, and a later account, all describe him as being taller than the other people from his surround (Nazareth). He wore his hair parted in the middle, and actually had either "chestnut" or "light" hair. Probably what we might call auburn today, that being lighter than the predominant olive-skinned, black haired people that comprised the majority population of the region. His skin was described as clear and somewhat paler than most, but with reddened cheeks, and he was said to have had grey eyes.

I don't know if it is allowed to put web addresses in these threads, or I would past the URL of the website. Google "Josephus' description of Jesus of Nazareth," and look at the first entry.

what is wrong with u peple on here every thread turns into a judgmental or racist or offensive thread!!! this is a dating site we r suppose to be looking for someone to date not critisize!!! i've had it n i'm sure there is others!!! n if ur going to critisize me n judge me then don't bother commenting!!!!
I've only been here a couple of days. So, I'm still learning who frequent posters are, who makes sense and who doesn't, etc. I have noticed, however, that there are a lot of personal attacks on people who make statements, that have nothing to do with the statement. Instead of saying, "I disagree with your statement, and this is why... " It turns into "You must be an idiot!"

That, or some troll comes along and every thread that doesn't go down some hate road gets turned into something sexual. I certainly don't see many threads that turn into discussions of actual viewpoints.

If I HAD to choose between those two, nice face. I'm going to spend a lot more time looking at her face than I am her body.

I don't think I should have to choose, though. If I keep looking long enough I will find one with a face I like, a body I like, a personality I like, and a voice I like. The whole package. But if the rest of the package was great (face, voice, words, attitude, personality) and the body was "acceptable" (i.e. nothing that actually repulsed me), I'd jump all over it!
