There is no national language academy for English the way there is in some countries like France and Spain so no official rules for usage.

For Spanish we have "La Real Academia Española de la Lengua" (RAE)or "The Royal Spanish Academy for Language", which dictates new norms (and old), and approves of any new words incorporated to the language, specially at this time when more and more English words are been "spanish-ized", making "Spanglish" more than a laughing matter.

I had no idea that there wasn't a National Language Academy, I thought all countries that shared a language were regulated by some Academy. So who approves new words in English? How they make their way into dictionaries? Who says a group of vowels and consonants is a word that means something specific?

confused

We ( me, whoever, and brits), on the other hand, pronounce 'than' without the 'twang'. Now, picture Pierce Brosnan and Brad Pitt saying 'than' and 'then' repeatedly.

uh oh!

dunno

I rather picture Brad Pitt doing something else, not necessarily talking blushing

Same with Pierce, but less...

it is the possessive form when used with a word tht ends in S

Could I use,for example: Show Mrs. Park Mr. Jones's book.

Or is the "s" after the apostrophe unnecessary?

Apostrophes are not the plural form of a word

Placing an apostrophe after a word before an "s" as in "Cave's" renders the word into a possessive form (or, alternatively and less formally, adds an "is" to the word). "Cave's" does not mean numerous caves, but rather could mean: "The cave's deep in the mountain" or "The cave's depths are beyond measure."

When you want to make a word plural, don't add an apostrophe to its end - simply add an "s." (Sometimes the word requires an "es" or other variations, but generally you'll be okay with just an "s".)

what does it means when the apostrophe goes after the word? i.e Jones'

It used to be a law. Not sure if it still is, but when I worked at the University last year, we had a lot of (about 50ish) Chinese students and none of them had siblings.

We have a lot of chinese immigrants here in Panama, most of them working at little neighborhood convenient stores. Most of them are young people that have migrated and gotten married and have started their own families, now having more than one child. The Chinese colony started when the Panama Canal was being built, I guess it was cheap labor. We have a very large Chinese colony.

The young ones here, are new immigrants, not descendant from the original Canal workers. They can hardly speak Spanish, but they are very hardworking. In the neighborhood where I live I can count 5 Chinese stores in a ratio of 5 blocks. Small blocks.

I think most countries will pass a law similar to that one, eventually. The demand for resources and good is ilimited. But the resources themselves are very limited, and the reserves are dangerously low.

Is it still a custom in China to allow only one child per family? There's a thought! And most of us thought they were barbarians! Imagine if the government had let them breed at leisure! and then feed them, clothe them, educate them, and pay them for being lazy! Ha! Chinese millenary wisdom at its best!

I totally agree with the OP- i am tired of hearing that the 'rich' must spplement 'the poor' more and more.
I am in full support for people that really NEED benefits from getting them,
That said, i feel that far too many people that messed around at school and didn't learn anything, left at 16, and have only been able to get minimum wage their whole life, expect to have the same standard of living as those who worked hard at school- wnet on to study hard at college, often having to also have a full time job to support themselves, then go on to work hard at a demanding job!??

While I understand that there are people who didn't do well even though they did the best they could, so many more just didn't bother.
I could make the same 'income' as I do now- if i had never married, or had a decent job- as i would be entitled to free medical expenses( $5000 for me last year). rent allowance, free job training, classes at college, even driving lessons etc etc. But my father would turn in his grave if i expected someone elses taxes to fund my choices in life.
I know this will not be a popular response, but it's how i feel

You are totally right on, one hundred per cent!

I frequently ask myself when does working hard to support our choices in life (quoting you my friend) became the exception of the rule instead of the rule? It seems that more and more people rather stand in line and "beg for their rights" (welfare, and so on...) than to stand in line to submit a job application. To be supported by the system is no longer a source of embarrassment (I remember a few years back when it was a very different matter to admit that one was on welfare).

There are countries were such a support system does not exist. You either work or you and yours will starve. Then, they start migrating to places like the US (for example), were you can get money for having children, and food, entire families are fed by the food stamps allowed for one or two children. You see, in third world countries, food stamps and welfare are unheard of. Hard work and scarcity is the rule. So the prospect of free food is very appealing.

Patronizing is a very dangerous business. It will come to a point when people is forced to fend for themselves, and left wondering, why? Why has our Government abandoned us? Is not our fault! After sucking the country dry.

It is really baffling. confused

I don't live in the US but I guess the same applies to almost every country. Why do people have to pay more taxes to fund irresponsibility? Why, instead of bass fishing, beer guggling and butt scratching, these people does not use up their time and take advantage of all the technology around them to improve their skills and pay for their own well being?

Why, instead of popping children and applying for welfare, don't these women use the free medical services and get birth control pills?

Why are we so supportive and award incorrect behavior in the name of "compassion" and "charity"?

Talking about tax shelters and foreign economies that are "friendlier" will start rolling a different ball: that of immigration. And the "foreign countries are taking the jobs that are rightfully ours". Jobs that nobody wants to do! Not in the USA! Taxes are to high, is prohibitive. No gain there.

I don't know. I am not following any of the political speeches given by the candidates. Nor the talk shows. I just know that one way or the other, my country will be affected. Because anything that happens in the USA, like it or not, affects the rest of the world.

And we quietly pay for it, with our Countries's tax money.

Actually my mom would never dream about matchmaking. My mom and dad raised us as very independent, strong, capable girls and sons. My dad used to tell us that we needed to learn to do everything around the house so we didn't have to depend on a man (indoor plumbing, carpentry and minor car things). He also was very strict about our studies: he said that we shouldn't have to depend on a man to provide everything for us, we had to be professionals. Because if they left us, even our panties would belong to them. My brothers, both, are very much capable of handling their kids, and running a house, sometimes even more efficiently than their own wives. My oldest brother is a control freak, that's all. My other brother, well, he is something else, a class of his own.

Mom says that a man is an "ill stitched patch" that would fall off without notice...

Mom and Dad were married for 35 years until death did them apart. Dad passed away 10 yrs ago.

So, now my sister and I, we are both divorced mothers. Mom does not discourage us from dating, but she insists that we should find ourselves first, get to know ourselves, before meeting someone. I don't think either one of us girls is in any hurry of doing laundry for anyone else but ourselves and our kids.

I think my mom would think of matchmaking as disrespectful and intruding... and she has too much class to go that way.
