You are not alone, these people are scammers and there are thousands of them. I have had 3 so far (not on this site) where they are using false identitys and false pictures. Eventually they are after money one way or another. I had the 3 removed from the sites but they just use different identities and get back on. I went through 175 pages of pictures of known scammers and found that these 3 guys are well known. There are various web sites whereby you can report known scammers.
So no don't give up on the dating sites as there are good people out there, you just have to be careful. Asking to see them on a web cam usually sorts them out. At least that way you know they are using a correct picture.
