Why the hell can't people understand that HRC is one of the most despicable characters in US politics? Ever since it became clear that she would not get the nomination she's been acting like a wounded wolverine, biting and scratching and doing her damnedest to take Obama down with her. She's trying to damage Obama as much as she can so John "100 more years in Iraq" McCain will beat him (make no mistake: Obama will be the nominee) and she can then run against McCain in 2012. Just what we, and the world, need: Another four years of the Rethugs, followed by Clinton II, a reprise of the regime that brought us NAFTA, the Iraqi sanctions that killed half a million children, incinerated a few score more at Waco, and bombed both Serbia and the only pharmaceutical factory in Sudan. And now she wants to "obliterate" Iran. We have a chance to get someone in who is not a complete disaster, and we're getting set to blow it, or let the white racists among us blow it for the rest of us. When are we ever going to learn?

As far as Barack and HRC getting it on goes, as one poster has mentioned, forget it. Michelle O. is not only brilliant and decent, she's hot. Hell, maybe SHE's the one who ought to be running. Maybe the people who want a woman--ANY woman--in the Presidency wouldn't have a problem with her, and she'd be a damned sight better than HRC or McCain.

Is it possible to be an intellectual and lack compassion?

I would think, intellect should lead one to be more accepting, understanding and tolerant.......

It would equip you with knowlege that everything (or everyone) has a roles or reason for existence.............

...............and the recognition that no human being is perfect (no one knows everything), we are all "work in progress"

Absolutely. Look at Kissinger. Look at William Buckley. Look at Lenin. But intellectuals as a group are no colder than anyone else. I think there's an idea floating around in our culture, and maybe in parts of this thread, that there's some sort of either/or dichotomy between the head and the heart, that being smart works against being kind and vice versa. And that's not true. Brains and compassion can and do interact like each hand washing the other.

Love Patterson!!

My favorite book is "The Legend Of Bagger Vance". Robert Redford made the movie and it highly sucked!! The book is amazing.

Also, "Chesapeake" by James Michener, and "The Mayor Of Casterbridge" by Eliot. Oh yea, I also loved "David Copperfield" by Dickens.
The Mayor of Casterbridge is by Thomas Hardy.

War and Peace (Tolstoy), Crime and Punishment, The Brothers Karamazov (Dostoevsky), any Robertson Davies or John Irving, Armies of the Night (Mailer). Herbert's Dune series is terrific, whether or not you're an sf fan.
