The Russians paid a heavy price in WW2 for trusting the word of Winston Churchill and they were left high and dry, with the consequence of millions of its citizens dying.
Stalin and everyone else hasn't forgotten the fact, i.e that you cant trust the word and promises that are made to them.
Recent events in Georgia have again proved that we the public have not been told the truth as far as the Georgian episode is concerned.
The citizens of the two regions that wanted independance had Russian citizens (the vast majority who were and are Russian and hold Russian passports).
let's say that someone somewhere decided to start a disinformation campaign to make the Russians look like they were being aggressive, when the truth was they had to go into a region to protect THEIR citizens.
The west has encroached on Russia's borders so much the leadership is very nervous, which is why the Russians invaded Afghanistan to protect its southern borders.
The Russians are a proud honest bunch of people, frankly i like them and they don't have the political correctness down yet, and the way they are portrayed in the West is annoying to put it mildly.
Add to that Europe is now dependant on Russian oil and gas reserves, it has to protect its financial interests and be able to back the system up militarily. if they didn't they would have to be incompetant, especially in the wake of recent American Foreign policy, thanks to frankly a campaign against Russia thats been going on since the second world war.
if you trust a politician, frankly your an idiot.....and the Russians learned the hard way.
They were crapped on from a great height remember, and 20-22 million of them died as a result. These facts and the fact that the red army finished WW2 are always overlooked.
Historically, parts of europe crapped on them time and time again...and now, in the time of fossil fuel dependance, they are now holding the cards, and will have the means to ensure nobody will mess with them.
