In Ireland smoking is banned in all business, pubs and restaurants as they are looking after the health of all the employees working there. In theory that would make any vehicle such as a van or a company car used for work purposes as part of the work environment just in case there are any non smokers in the vehicle.

Of course, here in the UK, it is now against the law to smoke in a public place or a place of work.

There has just been a news feature here reporting that a painter and decorater has been given a £30 on-the-spot fine for lighting up a cigarette in his van, as it was deemed his place of work.

Surely, with his profession, people's homes are his place of work? Not his van?? Like the rest of us, surely his van is just his method of getting to and from those places of work? And what possible harm was it doing to others?

Isn't there someone being murdered somewhere....??
Isn't someone being raped somewhere...?? Or robbed??

Ohhh NOOO... someone is having a fag somewhere!!!! QUICK..... CALL IN THE POLICE!!!

What the...??!!

Is it just me that thinks, all things considered, this is grossly disproportionate? A heavy-handed and graduated erosion of freedom? Overly dictatorial perhaps?

Any thoughts...?? (Whilst we are STILL allowed to have thoughts, that is...).

We have the same law in Ireland and as he is using his van to get to and from work it is deemed a working environment.
