OK-Can we get back to the basic Question again Please?

of course we can - Would you support the re-introduction of national service, right?

well, no I would not - and here are further reasons for my stance in this matter;

First off, we dont have the megalomaniac, Hitler, threatening to march through Europe at the moment as we did the last time conscription was enacted. The only threats we do have are relative to the shit hitting the fan in the fight for supremacy over oil supplies.

Any parent or person who has taken care of children must be able to spot the obvious here, that is, that these grown men never seem to have grasped the ethic of 'sharing' - yes, it sure does take a special kind of person to become a leader of a nation - they have to have failed the sharing test at nursery school/kindergarten.

The other lesson they didnt quite seem to assimilate from their pre school experiences seems to be 'how to let an argument drop' - these ruler type personalities simply go to bigger and better armaments - it really makes me wonder, being as the above mentioned are such simple basics in lifes lessons, or, if not, there may be something else driving their apparent dumbness such as, maybe, possibly, perhaps its.................................... MONEY........

When this does bubble over between Russia (China) and Europe (America), they wont be able to do the big old fashioned thing of infantry against infantry cos some of the other megalomaniacs also now have control of their own nuclear arsenals so they will be able to simply go for all out mutually assured destruction - and they wont be needing infantry for that one so in the meanwhile, they do need cannon fodder for the 'little' wars they have going on as a prelude.

If any of you think that any of these people hold human life as sacred, or that they have the parental concerns for your children's safety that 'normal' people do, if you think their hearts break they same way that yours do then think again, soldiers to these people are expendable - especially when they think they might use social unrest to foster the cause of conscription...............

- heres a list http://www.ruckus.org/warprofiteers/cards/alphabet.html of some of the companies and worlds richest people who have got where they are because your children and loved ones believed they were laying down their lives for king and country - tosh, they were laying down their lives because politicians, and the people that buy them (yes, they do buy them with all sorts of kick backs, not to forget their shares in many of the companies) know full well that war is very profitable.

Moving swiftly on to 1850 (ish) we have this quote from Mrs. E. Cady Stanton's "History of Woman's Suffrage," in which she speaks of the status of the female of the species in Boston about the year 1850. "Women could not hold any property, either earned or inherited. If unmarried, she was obliged to place it in the hands of a trustee, to whose will she was subject. If she contemplated marriage, and desired to call her property her own, she was forced by law to make a contract with her intended husband by which she gave up all title or claim to it. A woman, either married or unmarried, could hold no office or trust or power. She was not a person. She was not recognized as a citizen. She was not a factor in the human family. She was not a unit, but a zero in the sum of civilization.... The status of a married woman was little better than that of a domestic servant. By the English Common Law her husband was her lord and master. He had the sole custody of her person and of her minor children. He could punish her 'with a stick no bigger than his thumb' and she could not complain against him.... The common law of the State [Massachusetts] held man and wife to be one person, but that person was the husband. He could by will deprive her of every part of his property, and also of what had been her own before marriage. He was the owner of all her real estate and earnings. The wife could make no contract and no will, nor, without her husband's consent, dispose of the legal interest of her real estate.... She did not own a rag of her clothing. She had no personal rights and could hardly call her soul her own. Her husband could steal her children, rob her of her clothing, neglect to support the family: she had no legal redress. If a wife earned money by her own labor, the husband could claim the pay as his share of the proceeds." With such a contrast in mind, it is indeed difficult to see where the truth of the assertion lies when it is stated that the status of woman was indeed pitiful until Christianity exerted its influence for her betterment. And it is again curious to note that after a period of nearly 2000 years of Christian influence it was left for a sceptic such as Mrs. Stanton and her sceptical co-workers to bring about an amelioration of the degrading position of woman in Christian society." http://www.gutenberg.org/files/20248/20248-h/20248-h.htm#CHAPTER_XVII

We then have the rights which the suffragettes 'fought' to wrest from the jolly controllers for us, after that we made a good account of our abilities during the two world wars and currently we are in the final stages of the quest to smash that ole glass ceiling......... and none of this would ever have been achieved if we didnt posess a fighting spirit - we simply had to adapt and build different strategies as our oppressors were the very people who we loved the most - our menfolk...........

So, back to the original premise of the perception of women as being ill fit as warriors - I have to reason that in current circumstances, what we are seeing is a matter of nurture rather than nature and for a glimpse of the true capabilities of females, I suggest a look at the first sentence of this post.

Herstory is a rather longer missive than the 2000 yrs or so of the Christian version of History.........

So why do mostly men fight ?

For centuries, philosophers have pondered this question. Some have suggested that aggressive behaviour is part of the male make-up; others claim that fighting is a socially inspired behaviour. Poets and writers of great literature may be disappointed to learn that the aggressive male passions that have caused duels, skirmishes and wars may just be the result of reduced levels of serotonin in the brain.

In case you like to read more about this, there is a study called "Sex Differences in Brain Monamines and Aggression" by Jonathon Toot, Gail Dunphry and Daniel Ely from the Department of Biology, The University of Akron, Akron, Ohio.

I have my own theories on this one Charlos though Im sure biological differences do play a part, it is very difficult to pinpoint relative to the nature Vs nurture debate. I wrote the below bit earlier today;

There is a rich history of female warriors http://www.lothene.demon.co.uk/others/women.html#laws

genes, mind, experience and culture all play their parts in the perceived role of the female in any age or culture but the treatment of women in the history of religious influence is one which greatly interests me.

It can really be summed up in one word - subservience.......... there we have it and have had it since they included the Adam and Eve myth in their bible and since Hypatia was torn limb from limb by a suggestible mob who had been whipped into a superstitious frenzy. Her story represents the end of Platonic reaoning and the beginning of religious oppression.

What Christianity was trying to stamp out was alliegance to the Pagan Goddesses and Gods thus, they alienated all of femininity to the gross extent that when women again began to speak out, the witchcraft trials soon buckled them back down........

In a way, I see that the war lust of the men in the middle ages was the beginning of freedoms for women everywhere - off they all toddled to fight their wars and the women were left to manage their lands and estates - much to their surprise, they made a great job of it too and illumined a gleam of hope for daring and capable women all over Christendom - until of course, as mentioned earlier, the witchcraft trials put an end to that one........

contd.

All they've done is do their Duty(sorry conrad!)-These lads come from ALL walks of life-an share a camerardy that we civvies find hard to understand-some,when not too badly injured, have returned to the active zone, after recovery,WHY?-because their mates are out there!.

Regarding justification of the cause-I couldnt agree with you more!-tis a waste of bloody life which leaves blood on the Politicians-hardly in defence of the realm is it?-may i suggest you look on the "Help For Heroes" website-it is purely intended for the injured of this unnecessary conflict-but not politically involved-all they want is a bit of understanding to have been 'unlucky'(squaddie term) in the service of their country-i dont think thats too much to ask of anyone-without criticism-do you?.

Im not talking about the lads who are there already, they are there from choice - the thread is about conscription remember dunno do you really think we are so stupid that we wont see through your mixed points of reference...........

and please dont patronise me with the heart of gold stuff - my research is thoroughly done and to a high standard at that thank you very much - this is education, not heart ............

social housing itself was wrested from the hands of unscrupulous mill owners who used to see whole families out on the streets for so much as looking at the foreman the wrong way - do we want a return to those days cos its what will happen if you send all the youth off to face the afghani or iraqui firing squads - as I said earlier, they cant even equip the infantry they have alread got adequately...

It would sure solve the problem for the gvmt if they all went off and got shot - it would make bloody certain that there would be no young men left when they then decided to introduce further arcane laws and depravations - domestic gas prices have gone up by 50% already this year and I dont think people are going to stand for much more - old people are already having to choose between heating or food , and have been for some time (I worked at the CAB for a few yrs on social policy issues) but if we send all those young lads off to their phoney wars, who is going to be there for us - they have already disarmed us and now they are going for the disempowerment angle too - thats right send your sons to - so you can feel good barfing

Theres lots of stuff on google about how they could stop the two big wars of the moment within a very short time - anybody with half a brain knows that they depend on the black market to keep the economy alive - the blackmarket in drugs brings in lots of revenue for the gvmts and the pharmaceutical companies dont do too badly out of their rehab pills either.........

theres lots more on the history of inner cities to be said too - the numbers of people there grew right alongside the growth of british industry - they sold off the industies and now they are selling out the people - please dont fall for it...........

Lots of love,

Trish

Rights are Inherent in People, they are NOT "GIVEN" by Government,so the claim that Rights entail "Responsibilities "toward the State is a Bunch of Hogwash!
Duties and Responsibilities,in Exchange of ones OWN RIGHTS,what a Fecking Joke

Let's hope they will feel the Whip on their Own Backs one of these days!!!!!!!

Hi Trish!!

Hiya Conrad wave

Your analogy with slavery is pretty apt - have you ever heard of sink estates Conrad? they are pretty desperate places and are the seat of most of the problems currently manifesting themselves in the form of youth violence - the term 'sink' estate disgustingly derives from what is left quite literally, at the bottom of the sink when the plug is pulled and the washing up done, you know, all the gunk and detritus - well thats what these kids have to live with and invariably also have to face the fact that its pretty unlikely they'll ever escape it either - this is the ultimate let down of a society which can spend millions on armaments yet they say they cant do anything about these young people - they make me bloody puke! but even worse are the people who actually blame these kids for their plight - think about it, what the hell chance do any of them have or have they had to do anything about their lot - IT IS NOT THEIR FAULTS! What they are doing is wrong yes but were they educated in any other way - they didnt get the chance to go to the best schools and believe me, as soon as they do start school they are streamed for the simple reason that the schools are so undersatffed , they can only concentrate on excellence for the select few - yes, it does go on, even in inner city schools they have one or two who excell every year - the rest are tolerated with many leaving school illiterate - we dont see pupils from private educational institutions leaving there illiterate do we? so whats the difference - money talks maybe.

Theres no work for these people so the economy is worse than dire, theres consequently no leisure facilities and the shops dont stock anything like the stuff they see advertised on the tv - the schools have a desperate fight on their hands to keep staff and pupil absenteeism is a joke.................. so what exactly do these people have to look forward to - somebody is now saying, yeah, escape from the sink estates is possible - go and be cannon fodder for your country instead - wow!

I may have a good education now but it has cost me dearly - I was a kid from a council estate but that was when there was plenty of work for everybody, you know, the days before they sent all our industry off to China and before they privatised much of the industry too - these kids that people are saying should be sent off as cannon fodder are the victims of sucessive governments letting them down - and now they have to go and face death and destruction in foreign lands to show fealty to a government which has done diddly squat for then - some people have got their heads on backwards if you ask me........

Good Question ben?-but i think inadverdently Mantho & Coopy have hit the nail on the head between them!.

I'm picking up vibes of "We shouldn't be forced to do anything we dont want to" and "Well, its not for everybody is it?".

OK-so lets go back to basics?-Unfortunately we live in a society today that compliments itself on the 'Nanny' basis-in other words-if you dont want to take responsibility for yourself or undertake any duties that may reasonably be expected of you-Not to Worry-we'll do it for you!!!.

Yes-Duties and Responsibilities-something that used to be at the heart of community living-It starts in the family home then extends to school and eventually with your own family or yourself as an adult. The degree of Duties and Responsibilities one undertakes dictates the standard of person you are or will become-not to mention,as a parent, that what you will pass on to your children.

Is it right that the view should be taken "Let someone else do it?" or "No way-am i doing that!"-yet if the Duty or Responsibility is to ones own benefit-you'll get trampled in the rush!-thats the damage the 'Nanny' state has done to our society!.

National Service was seen as a Duty and Responsibility-didnt have to be liked?-just performed-and regarding infantry service?-that is only one part of the armed forces-there are dozens of alternatives-if one chooses infantry and decides its not for them then they wont finish training-probably transferred to an alternative unit.

Discipline-what is wrong with that?-I,personally had the cane a few times at school-plus numerous clips around the earhole!-Big Deal!-hasnt exactly scarred me for life!-I done wrong-I got caught-I got punished-thats life!-Whats the remedy today?-I wont even go into it?????.

are you living in cloud cuckoo land or what? the British army cant even adequately provide for the cannon fodder it already has and resignations are at an all time high - soldiers are dying in combat because they are inadequately equipped, if they lose kit in combat they have to pay for the cost of replacements themselves - veterans have to fight through the courts to get the compensation they are entitled to and current soldiers have to pay for their own private insurance.........

if this gvmt introduce conscription it will be for one reason alone and that would be simply to provide cheap cannon fodder very mad

just last year in Iraq, there was a troop of soldiers gunned down by insurgents and the cry from their commander afterwards was that this would not have happened if they had been better equipped......

resignations soar and at the same time the chiefs of staff are calling for more infantry - coincidence? I dont think so................

people, dont let this talk of a bit of discipline for the youth sway you into thinking that the army is the only solution - let them put that money into the education system instead - let them put the money into improving the lot of the disadvantaged in the inner cities and then we may see a lessening of the problems faced - give the youngsters a hope for the future by way of promise of work or the ability to see a way out of the inner city ghettos and options other than a life on benefits - give them hope!

but please dont send them off as ill equipped infantry to be gunned down as toys of the megalomanical rulers that start these wars in the interests of financial gain.

Ive been keeping an eye on this too and just found this on the bbc's site......

As Hurricane Gustav approaches New Orleans, the internet is providing detailed information, personal accounts and lively discussions about all aspects of the storm. Here are a few of them:

The first port-of-call for official details of the hurricane's progress can be found at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Their National Hurricane Center website has maps plotting the predicted route of the storm, as well as a array of technical data.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency and Louisiana's emergency pages also have useful resources, advice and links.
Communities have set up their own sites to give information

Replete with maps and accessible information are the news sites MSNBC and NOLA, as well as the weather site Accuweather.

Amid concern that the oil industry could be badly affected, the Wall Street Journal has a map tracking the hurricane, marked with the major energy facilities along its route.

Communities have launched their own sites and blogs such as Hurricane Gustav Resources to give information about road and school closures, evacuation shelters "and more".

Personal accounts of the storm can be found on local pages like New Orleans metablogs and Vasavana, where citizens are relaying their experiences of packing up and heading away from the path of the storm.

Established web favourites such as Wikipedia have set up dedicated pages with lists of shelters, people offering their help and other links. Facebook has a number of groups for people to keep in touch and Twitter has plenty of people commenting on the storm.

Lively discussions can be found on weather sites such as Jeff Masters' blog and Ejang, which is tracking the storm using Googlemaps.
