I love that we have married people here - how sad it woul be if people had to stop socialising with their friends because they get married - it would be more bizarre if we 'didnt' have married people here imo dunno

That is, the ones who are honest about it - the ones who are intentionally dishonest are another matter..........

I know Sky, that s exactly what Im getting at - Its the same here too, Im not essentially having a dig at America, Im also having a dig at the British both here and over on the UK forum - it seems to me that the words 'politician' and 'honesty' just dont go hand in hand sigh

laugh no comments then - hahaha - its only 130millions in £ roughly - a pittance in the face of trillions being found for the bailout dunno

Maybe its because the 'powers that be' cant afford to get involved in the Darfur issues because that would really put them up against other super powers and they just dont have the dosh to finance it - but a bit of small change for OXFAM wouldnt hurt too much surely........ very mad

I cant believe that America, who have achieved so much on the world stage (positively or negatively, as you like it) cant get a little thing like voting methods right and not just this time time round but time afer time.

Im back to that bizarre thing I said/read a few weeks ago which suggested that with the financial fiasco and now a votes fiasco, that Bush may just get to extend his time in office by implementing emergency measures - the markets are falling drastically here again today and the interbank lending rate is still prohibitively high - lets see what the next 24 hrs bring.......... I still do think its bizarre by the way

I don't think you are naive,Trish.
I knew that councils put money in bank accounts,so that it could earn some interest while it was waiting to be allocated to community services.
But,like you,i never thought for a second that some councils were building these mega portfolio's,instead of spending the money on services,as they are supposed to do.
It becomes clear now,why we are asked to pay more and more every year.
It sounds to me as though a heck of a lot of money is being salted away,to pay for gilt edged council pensions, while the rest of us take the flak,of these troubled times.

Thanks for that correct spelling of 'naive' - Im dyslexic and was too het up to spell check laugh

Like yourself, I had no problem thinking our money was ok earning interest in the bank but surely, if they were investing in these mega portfolios, they have a duty to inform us of the progress or otherwise of these investments?

This whole fiasco totally disgusts me and its getting worse by the hour, peoples pensions and homes are threatened and all the money thats "salted away" could make things so much easier on people.

If the root cause of all this is the mis-selling of mortgages then surely, the people who allowed for this falsification of the economy should be paying the price and not people who have worked all their lives for a bit of security in their old age.........

I really does make me wonder what the hell they are doing with the other taxes they get from us - is that gonna be next? they will let us know next week that the health service cant pay their wages next month cos all the dosh was invested in the collapsed stock market too...........

And what of road taxes, what are they doing with the funds from those payments - lets not forget VAT either...........

I remember wondering a few years ago about what the outcome of such practices would be, Id heard that people on very low incomes were being given mortgages well in excess of their earnings and that the brokers werent even checking details of claims anyway - that was vastly different practice to what went on when I once worked in a building society.

Blonde's Revenge

It has finally happened. The blondes of the world got together and have decided to take revenge on the brunettes:

WHAT'S BLACK AND BLUE AND BROWN AND LAYING IN A DITCH?
A brunette who's told too many blonde jokes.

WHAT'S THE REAL REASON A BRUNETTE KEEPS HER FIGURE?
No one else wants it.

WHY ARE SO MANY BLONDE JOKES ONE-LINERS?
So brunettes can remember them.

WHAT DO YOU CALL A BRUNETTE IN A ROOM FULL OF BLONDES?
Invisible.

WHAT'S A BRUNETTE'S MATING CALL?
"Has the blonde left yet? "

WHY DIDN'T INDIANS SCALP BRUNETTES?
The hair from a buffalo's butt was more manageable.

WHY IS THE BRUNETTE CONSIDERED AN EVIL COLOR?
When was the last time you saw a blonde witch?

WHAT DO BRUNETTES MISS MOST ABOUT A GREAT PARTY?
The invitation

WHAT DO YOU CALL A GOOD LOOKING MAN WITH A BRUNETTE?
A hostage

WHO MAKES BRAS FOR BRUNETTES?
Fisher-Price

WHY ARE BRUNETTES SO PROUD OF THEIR HAIR?
It matches their mustache

KNOW WHO INVENTED BLONDE JOKES?
Brunettes, they had nothing better to do on Friday or Saturday nights

Even they wouldnt help me, I make shopping lists and promptly lose em, set timers and forget to press the activate button; often stand there scratching my bonce wondering what I went into a particular room for; dont even mention keys or timetables and for some peculiar reason, whenever I go on the hunt for something Ive lost, I find whatever it was I lost the time before laugh ID cards would only add to my confusion grin

why didnt these councils and so on,see this coming

Dunno Tina, maybe they did dunno cant be sure of anything at the moment and as Mike says above, they also have lots invested successfully in other places. My gripe, and call me nieve all you like but I had no idea that they were taking such risks with what is essentially our money - I dont remember this being voted on or even ever being mentioned in the press - furthermore, as individual councils are run by various parties, this fiasco cant be blamed on any particular one of them - I dont know which one of them allowed this to start happening - i will research that in a min.

below is taken from a BBC interview with Mark Wallace, campaign director at the TaxPayers’ Alliance.

Every year we hear that councils don’t have enough money and need to raise taxes but it seems they have had sufficient excess tax to salt tens of millions of pounds away. The fact that they have invested this money and seem to have lost it is even more shocking and is sadly yet another reminder of the poor financial management in local councils.

“In short, they should not have stashed this money in the first place and they simply weren’t equipped to try to be clever in the markets with it.”

How many billions have they suddenly found for these bailout schemes?

ADDIS ABABA, Oct 10 (Reuters) - The number of Ethiopians needing emergency food assistance has jumped to 6.4 million from 4.6 million in June, the aid agency Oxfam said on Friday.

Drought and high food prices have both contributed to the worsening crisis in Ethiopia and other parts of the Horn of Africa like Somalia and north Kenya, aid workers say.

Oxfam, citing U.N. figures, said there was a $260 million shortfall for agencies trying to address Ethiopia's crisis.

"Compared with the funds going to shore up the global financial system, the aid needed to save lives in Ethiopia is a drop in the ocean," Oxfam's country director Waleed Rauf said.

While government figures showed 6.4 million people needed emergency assistance, more than 13.5 million were in need of some sort of aid, Oxfam said. "The number of those suffering severe hunger and destitution has spiralled," Rauf said. (Reporting by Barry Malone, editing by Tim Pearce)

This econimic crisis disgusts me in the face of what these poor people must be suffering!.............

Why the heck arent our governments representing the wishes of the people who elect them frustrated

I just dont know what the heck is wrong with this world anymore sigh actually, strike that, I know only too well - its the obscene face of greed, scrambling through every strata of humanity - greed has totally obscured kindness and any semblance of altruism that there ever was - all this bloody economic turmoil that they found the dosh to deal with but what about the starving in the Sudan, what about the poisoned water systems (basically the whole sea) and what about oh so many other human injustices frustrated
