On 25 April 2005, for the first time in many years, the conclusions of the EU General Affairs and External Relations Council made reference to recent developments regarding the issue of the name of the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia. The reference was as follows: The Council noted the recent developments with regard to the dispute over the name of the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, and specifically the proposals presented by the UN Secretary Generals Special Representative in support of efforts toward a solution. The Council encouraged Greece and the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia to intensify their efforts with a view to finding a negotiated and mutually acceptable solution within the framework of United Nations Security Council Resolutions 817/1993 and 845/1993 as quickly as possible.

On 8 October, 2005, Mr. Nimetz presented a new proposal, the contents of which have not been made public. FYROM initially accepted this new proposal. Greece, however, declared it unacceptable as it adopted FYROMs position.

Greece continues to support the procedure stipulated in UN Resolution 813/93, stating its readiness to reach a jointly acceptable solution on the name issue.

Greece has demonstrated its desire to reach a solution that will lead to the full normalisation of bilateral relations, facilitate the course of its neighbour towards the Euro-Atlantic institutions, and consolidate stability and cooperation in our region, which would be conducive to solving the issue of Kosovo. Greece has also made it clear that there is no question of its neighbour acceding either to the European Union or to NATO under the name Republic of Macedonia.

Thanks for the insight....

A very major issue in the Balkan region now is the Macedonia name issue. If you aren't familiar, there is a dispute over the name of a country. Greece objects to the neighbouring Skopje government using the name Macedonia, saying it implies claims on a Greek province of the same name and that it distorts history, much of it to do with Alexander the Great...a Greek from the region of Macedonia. Greece does not accept the name Macedonia for the country that they call FYROM (Former Yugoslavian Republic of Macedonia). They are prepared to block FYROM's (or Macedonia's...whichever you prefer) accession to NATO at the Bucharest summit this week. It's a very heated topic here and capturing all of the diplomatic, political, and media attention. Things are coming to a head and there will be a tremendous fallout from this issue...the issue of a name.

My questions to fellow CSers are these...

If you are aware of the issue, what is your stance?

And, on a simpler plane, how important do you think a name is? Is a rose by any other name as sweet? Aren't we often defined by our names? I know that I certainly am...or, at least, there is a great assumption about my name, if one has not seen me or ever spoken with me. My name is Jeffrey. It is always assumed (understandably so, really) that I am a man. Nope. Never have been one, either! So, I can certainly relate to the importance of a name and all that it implies.

I would like to hear your comments. What's in a name?

I do know this. Call anything in this area and there will no bickering.....

What is the trouble anyway. Greece has a region of this name, but it is merely a region. Did they copywrite it? No.

There are plenty of names shared around the world, so how does that possibly distort history??

This is why I adore Wladimir Klitschko...

Not only is he a world class boxer, with a Hugo Boss contract, his interests and hobbies include:
new developments in info tech, Internet, study of foreign languages, magic tricks, water sports, mountain skiing, chess and bungee jumping. Wladimir takes flying lessons on both plane and helicopter.

He's socially & politically active ... not to mention he's participated in chess with the likes of Gary Kasparov.

There's more to that man than just a lovely Russian face & body... he's a package.
Not what I would call "fleeting" beauty when it starts on the inside & finds it's way out.

Insightful.

It is what I admire about some MMA stars, who have degrees behind them and not just some down on his luck thug from the streets who is looking to beat people up and get paid for it.....

Nope, I haven't been athletic since I was around 15 years old when I played amateur hockey.

I go for the arty types with no physical appearance hang ups. It appeals to me so much more than these beautifully sculpted people.

I do agree though, they are fleetingly attractive to the eye, but nothing more.

I do wish to quote you Jan for reason being, that this is not a hang up thead.

I do appreciate beauty however, albeit pictured or otherwise.

There are many in my life who pique me with personality and pizzaz. Art being one of them.

So, polygamy...

Polygamy exists in three specific forms, including polygyny (one man having multiple wives), polyandry (one woman having multiple husbands), or group marriage (some combination of polygyny and polyandry). Historically, all three practices have been found, but polygyny is by far the most common.

In most countries, bigamy is illegal. However, in some countries - including America and Canada - the practice of polygamy is tolerated largely because

it is done as a religious practice (and thus involves issues of religious freedom), and
the people involved do not actually marry before the law. Rather, a man will legally marry one woman, and ‘marry’ additional wives in what they consider to be a ’spiritual’ sense.

The American taxpayer pays for much of this lifestyle. Recent records show in one year residents here collected more than $8-million from social services — including food stamps, welfare, health care — but the entire town paid less than $100,000 in income taxes.

“They are told to go on welfare,” Jessop said. “It’s called, “bleeding the beast.” They find it amusing that Satan is supporting God’s work.”

- Source: One Woman’s Crusade, ABC News, Mar. 4, 2004

This is one reason the practice is now under scrutiny in America - particularly in Colorado and Utah, states with significant polygamist communities.

Other reasons why polygamy has come under fire:

Some polygamists ‘marry’ underage girls, often (though not always) against their will
In some religious polygamist sects, women are treated as property, and are subject to arranged marriages...

Just wondering what you guys think about this?

Not to take away anything from your thread, but.....

Things are tolerated in Canada because;

1) We are young and still growing

2) Have a tendency to be passive
