French president nicholas sarkozy has banned muslim women from wearing the traditional sharia dress. He stated that 'it is oppressive and submissive'.
This begs the question. How do you feel about the tradition? And do u believe perhaps the quest for fashion identity in the west is comparable?

It is dehumanizing as opposed to symbolic, like covering one's head. There are women in S. Arabia killed trying to cross streets because they cannot see peripherally out of the costume.

In a lot of muslim countries I cant even get a glass of wine for my sacraments.
laugh

If somebody want to walk with high moral.
Start lookin in your own backyard first.
A lot of muslim countries have the sharia wich means I cant openly practise my faith there.
We in the west have to allow everything?
While in the middle east I cant even have a drink.

sorry bullshit!

You really don't see the point! The women don't want to wear it, but it is forbidden by there religion, as the men say..... to not where it.... read up on that okay.....How would you feel if you had to where cloths that covered your entire body 24/7 365 days a year, and in 100 degree weather at the peak of summer......thing about what your saying, the president is giving the women freedom to choose.....professor

OK where i live there r lots of muslims too and when i talk to woman that r covered most of them see that as good thing and r proud to wear that.I see on treads how r u talking about rights of muslim woman but dont u think that they like it...i mean for comparation with western woman wich r mostly single mum working 2 jobs, behave as man and woman in situation do u think they have easyer life? And muslim woman just stay at home,go to cosmetic and make them beautiful for their husbend(thats their job),stay with their kids, order food from restoran, shoping whatever they want and how much they want, hang with friends(not in club pissing her self).....why u think they wouldent like that.Thats the way muslim woman live here and been to Qatar its same there.

Brilliant point! The practicalities of it.

I suppose we in the west have many impractical fashion items aswell tho. Stilletos being one.

France being a westernized country, most muslim women have the freedom of choice whether to wear a burqa or not.

It does seem they choose so freely.

And with carla bruni as first lady, maybe the alterior motive would b a boost the france's fashion industry!laugh

Wow my mistake, but it douse give them the freedom to take it off, it's the husbands that started the dumb shit in the first place, they would use women as there slaves and want them covered because they were jealous of other guys looking at them......History.......

Not really-there are all kinds of restrictions on these things. Sarkozy also wants to ban balaclava wearing for protesters, with good reason. In Philadelphia, there have been cases of armed robbers who are male donning burqua's when robbing banks to hide their identity.

Another great point! The balance of tolerance and statism and how people perceive the burqa and what it represents.

Some days, when i cant get the 'look' happening (we've all been there ladies!), i wish i had a couple of burqa's in my closet!laugh

Well im glad the french has banned it, have you ever wondered how hot and humid and unhygenic it is in a burqa, those poor women who are forced to wear them.
In saudi Arabia I hear women are not allowed to go alone anywhere, and neither can they drive, Off course i have also heard that now women do drive, not sure.

Im glad France has taken the step.
