I am confronted by too many brands of wines at the supermarket. Which wine producing country makes the most consistent quality in your opinion?

Difficult to determine which is the most "consistent". France could be having a terrible year for grapes, while Napa Valley, USA, could be having an excellent season. It all depends upon the "year" of that particular bottle. That is why wine is graded in years, among other factors.

south african wine is doin good lately.
australian wine is up and comin.
and chile(south america is doin prettty good also.
spain off course too, but its a very strong taste mostly

look for the grape or style that you like and stick to it.
buy a bigger boxes if you find a good one.

Merlot wine is very popular.Merlot is a certain kind of grape.

and personally I like the pinot blanc a lot.

A lot of wines get mixed these days to keep a constant quality level.

Here in Latin America the Chileans and Argentines seem to have the best fame...though I am finding that Mexican sparkling white makes a really good low-budget alternative to Champagne.

C´mon!! It´s gotta be Spain! .. I have lived amongst the merlot grapes in France! wine But for value for money - I am now living back in Spain & am now enjoying numerous bottles of Vi de Taula at 89 cents a bottle!! .. Well - one has to find the best at the cheapest in this `economy decline´ drinking I have just returned from Canada & the price of wine scared me to death!
Just so happy grin to be home again to stock up for peanuts!!

Now we are narrowing in...some of these (Mouten Cadet, for example) are available here in Mexico but are rather pricy. Which of these are economical, dry and reliable for you?

Well, I DON'T do sweet or even medium..... of course!! They are all pretty dry.

If you like the driest.... Sicilian or very south Italian is the way to go. The reds are full-bodied and fruity, of course. Otherwise, for French.... Muscadet and Macon Villages are pretty dry.

I am biased towards Italian wines in case you hadn't guessed?

And sorry... re. Macon, I don't have a sadille(sp??) on my keyboard....

Salute!! wine (don't have an acute accent either!). roll eyes

Italy is undoubtedly the world´s largest producer and there are some wonderful wines to try.

However, living in Spain I am biased, and I would suggest you try some of our wonderful wines, particularly those from the Ribero del Duero region.
