If you were the captain of the Titanic, what would you have done to save your passengers?

According to all I've heard, Captain Smith more less went into shock and ceased to function as the captain of a ship after she struck that iceberg.

I think I could have saved virtually everybody onboard but I will not reveal how until I've heard other people comment on what they would have done.

No, you are absolutely correct they only had enough lifeboats for about half the people but it conformed to the outdated rules in place at the time. The lifeboats were assigned by a formula that was based on tonnage and they used the maximum tonnage on the chart but Titanic was 6X bigger than the biggest ship on the chart.

The captain told the crew to steer alongside the iceberg. It has been said that if the ship went straight into the iceberg, the disater wouldn't have happened.

Had I been the captain of the Titanic I wouldn't have listened to that idiot who persuaded him to go full speed ahead in an area notorious for its icebergs just to make it a record voyage. His stupidity caused the disaster.

You are right! His name way Ismay and I read where he survived by sneaking on a lifeboat pretending to be a woman. He was a sleeze all the way to the bone!
BTW I may have err'd was it HMS or RMS Titanic?

I don't think there would've been anything I could've done.I also doubt if all the passengers could of got off the ship alive anyway unless there would've been an ample supply of lifeboats.According to the movie Titanic the lowerclass passengers were locked down in the lower parts of the ship.

From what I read in the transcripts of the investigation of the accident, many of the lifeboats were deployed with less than a full load of people on board. They were afraid to pick people out of the water for fear of swamping the boat. They actually rowed away from them.

If I were the captain, and this may sound crazy, but I would have let the ship hit the berg straight on. I think that there would be less chance of water spilling over the bulkheads.

You are most welcome, Ooby. If my memory serves me correctly, she was commissioned for The White Star Line and built in Belfast.

Of course, you can probably Google it.....
