In ancient Greece, Socrates was reputed to hold knowledge in high
esteem and wisdom. professor

One day an acquaintance met the great philosopher and said:
"Socrates, do you know what I just heard about your friend?" conversing
"Hold on a minute talk to hand ," Socrates replied. "Before telling me anything I'd like you to pass a little test.
It's called the Triple Filter Test."
"Triple filter?" the man said,
"That's right," Socrates continued. "Before you talk to me about my friend, it might be a good idea to take a moment and filter what you're going to say. The first filter is Truth:

Have you made absolutely sure that what you are about to tell me is true?"
"No," the man said, "actually I just heard blah about it and....."

"All right talk to hand," said Socrates. "So you don't really know if it's true or not. Now let's try the second filter, the filter of Goodness:

Is what you are about to tell me about my friend something good?"
"No, on the contrary, it......"

"So, talk to hand" Socrates continued, "you want to tell me something bad about him, but you're not certain it's true. You may still pass the test though, because there's one filter left: the filter of Usefulness:

Is what you want to tell me about my friend going to be useful to me?"
"No, not really but....."

"Well, talk to hand" concluded Socrates, "if what you want to tell me is u]neither [true nor good nor even useful, why tell it to me at all?" dunno talk to hand

This is why Socrates was a great philosopher and held in such high esteem. It also explains why he never found out his best friend was sleeping with his wife.

LOL! I guess what depends on what your definition of useful is. Personally, I think knowing that tidbit information would be somewhat useful. It would get me one step closer to that house in Beliz.

That is what I learned too. He didn't actually live with either wife as well, but just visited now and again. His youngest wife was with him just before he died. (That is documented.)

Anyway, the OP didn't pass Socrates test in telling us this, because it fails on all three levels.........It is hearsay, so no truth in it. It is something bad, and it is useless information......rolling on the floor laughing

From what we're told about shrewish Xantippe it may be that Socrates would have been happy for anyone else to sleep with her....
I seem to remember that in PHAEDO the women were led away before the Hemlock...

"Socrates (470-399) was the son of a sculptor and a midwife, and served with distinction in the Athenian army during Athens’ clash with Sparta. He married, but had a tendency to fall in love with handsome young men, in particular a young soldier named Alcibiades. He was, by all accounts, short and stout, not given to good grooming, and a lover of wine and conversation. His famous student, Plato, called him “the wisest, and justest, and best of all men whom I have ever known” (Phaedo)."

And why would Socrates have cared about whom his wife was sleeping with?

(Please recall this was ancient Greece and that Socrates was far more entranced with other seductions.)blushing

"Socrates wasn’t loved by everyone by any means. His unorthodox religious views (that there was only one god behind the variety of Greek gods) gave the leading citizens of Athens the excuse they needed to sentence him to death for corrupting the morals of the youth of the city. In 399, he was ordered to drink a brew of poison hemlock, which he did in the company of his students."

thumbs up thumbs up thumbs up thumbs up thumbs up

Still, regardless of his controversy, he died for a good reason

Voyager obviously hasn't read Plato. Nice to see someone who has.

you are absolutely right dear, I didn't read that much for neither Plato nor Socrates. Also, I am neither a philosopher nor a scholar of Philosopher. Still, I like to be informed and do my best to read selectively to take what I like and see that it fits my understanding in life. Most of my readings are related to my profession as an IT consultant.

Also to tell you the truth, I am a practical person more than a Philosophy person, yet as I said I like to be, to some point informed dunno

Thanks for the post sis,,wave
