You have to be real gentle about it. Some breeds get awfully depressed when their weight is mentioned to them.
Like do not tell them that "Yes, you look fat in that collar."
Or when they beg for a milkbone, do not say "Are you sure you really need that?" in a condesending tone of voice.
Your best bet would be to offer to go for walks 'with' the dog. Mention how much you want to live longer so you two can play frisbee together long into your individual lives.
And maybe, switch their brand of dog food for the less fat ones, but eat a salad in front of them.
They won't feel so left out.

Nah once you start switching diets they are onto you. Thats when they get into the whole cat food binge diet.
