Are you going on extended travels? - or just a holiday?

I'm in Kuala Lumpur right now, and I've visited Malaysia a few times. But over the last few years, while I've been rattling around Asia, I've spent a lot of time in Thailand, and I'd strongly recommend it. Although, I've avoided seedy touristy places like Pattaya.

Ok, here is the good news….I was born in Malaysia, grow up in Singapore, been to Thailand and the last 1 year work in Indonesia. Does that sound good ?

Well, when comparing Malaysia to Indonesia, I must admit Malaysia is more religious and strict. However as long as you don’t do anything obscene or get caught in bed with a Muslim other than your wife (if you are a muslim) than you are safe. Malaysia is a very multi cultural place. You could meet Indians, Chinese, Malays, other mix races spread across Malaysia peninsula. It’s colorful with various religious temples, festivals, variety of delicious Asian/fusion food and tropical forests. If you want to see them all in one place then Penang or Malaka is a good pick. Its decorated with post war shop houses and colonial building. As for shopping ….well depends on what you are looking for and at which state you are in.

Thailand….not sure your taste bud but the food is rather sweet and spicy for me. For Muslims and vegetarians pls carry some noodles for emergency. I survived on fruits, salads and Indian vegetarian food. The Buddhist in Thailand eat meat. Counterfeit goods and prostitution plenty there. Buddhist and monarchy dominance is clearly visible in every corner of the streets. Be very careful with pick pockets and drink spikes. They have some really beautiful beaches but as pretty as Bali and out door activities too. Malaysia too have it but I think in Thailand its rather active.

I would say, If you ahead this way then cover both places since they are not far. Arrive at Penenag international airport. Look around Penang and Kuala Lumpur by bus or train. Then head for Thailand by bus spend few days there and head to the aiport back to catch your flight back home.

Hope my contribution helps. If you need more help. Drop me a line.

I'll back that, and take the time to point out that Lankawi is way different from the rest of Malaysia, more relaxed and more Chinese around town.

A short trip with a "tin can" of a Jet-boat brings you to a small city in Thailand where shopping is great.

For holiday with a pearl - Lankawi is sure to be the place thumbs up
