Yes you are so spot on the sad thing is that some people ho are rascist & abusive never change. I think it is quite shallow to be both racist & abusive. I do wish on here in the forums we could somehow banish the both forever.

typomatic: The problem though is that you and the Capt are intelligent and use that ability to discern between standing up to a bully and attacking someones personality.
Those who are less well blessed with common sense will however confuse the two and always take the attack side as that will give them the “right” to give abuse back.
I love the word “sycophants” “a servile or obsequious person who flatters somebody powerful for personal gain” it describes exactly what occurs on forums.

I like that you said "I love the word "sycophants". I am a lover of words and since I've lived in Greece, I am particularly interested in the etymology of words. You inspired me to look this one up (I knew the definition, but not the etymology), as it sounded as if it came from Greek. Interestingly, this is what I found: (It is from Wiktionary, and I slightly edited it, as Greek characters don't show up properly when copied)

"From Ancient Greek (sukophantes), itself from "sykon", (fig) + "phaino", (I show, demonstrate). The gesture of "showing the fig" was a vulgar one, which was made by sticking the thumb between two fingers, a display which vaguely resembles a fig, which is itself symbolic of a vagina (sykon 'vagina' also meant vulva). The story behind this etymology is that politicians in ancient Greece steered clear of displaying that vulgar gesture, but urged their followers sub rosa to taunt their opponents by using it."

Cool, eh?

you know, what i hate most is those people who have no opinion on a subject, or at least, chose not to share their opinion, and instead get on everyone's nerves by making comments that are simply sarcastic and often off topic, with nothing positive to contribute to the thread in question., just because they feel that this online thing is nothing more than simple entertainment and not really all that consequential.

they get on my nerves cause they do not care one way or the other, what the subject/s is/are. instead they throw something into the thread just to push buttons and see people's reactions. I guess they figure that once they log out they actually have a life outside of this site and more important things to concern themselves with.

they are also the kinds of people who chose not to post threads in here asking for opinion on matters that are important to him/her (such as relationships, finances, medical concerns, etc)... these people apparently feel that the opinion of those here in CS do not matter because, when it comes down to it, they feel, that as an individual, they are the ones having to make their own decisions and they dont think they need strangers on the internet to either tell them what to do nor validate their choice/s....

so these jerks just come to CS looking for nothing more than entertainment and the potential to make some "internet" friendships. i mean, how rude is it to think that talking to someone in here is any different from friendships forged in the real world?? where one can actually physically interact and have a real beer or dinner, see facial expressions, hug, shake hands, share experiences like camping, sports, art, etc

i mean c'mon folks!!! the last thing i want is for someone to attack me here because, that is just gonna soooo hurt my feelings and then im gonna be depressed and not able to function in the real world, where things really do NOT matter, cause CS is the center of the world !!! ya know????

personally i spend ALL my time off line thinking of what went on in here when i was online last !!!!

doh

That was so well put, and how I believe we should all be on here. On a forum thread which was locked ( and became quite nasty), I did put in the end that we all on here have the most amazing opportunity in life. We have so many countries, cultures, customs, beliefs, faiths, etc that we can all learn from one another & yes we will disagree with others points of views but to do so with dignity & respect.

And this is also a very good point, Steven. We should treat these forums as an opportunity to expand our breadth of knowledge and as a means of gaining new insight into the vast array of cultures and amazing diversity from the world in which we live. Unfortunately, some minds refuse to expand.

Very cool!!

I also take great interest in the origins of words, especially how they get changed between other languages, but retain their root.
Thank you for the definition

steven6611: Hi Typo

Yes wel put by all 3 of you, another thing I have found is expressions, sayings & even humour can be a slight problem on here . What I mean by that is as an Aussi we have a different sense of humour, different sayings & expressions & I do know personally speaking that it can sadly be taken the wrong way from someone overseas who just doenst get it.

Also the other problem is some people who dont read everything that is written is a post or several posts and just take bits & pieces here & there & use that as an argument without reading the whole response
Excellent point. I don't know how many times I've seen someone getting the wrong end of one post, while admitting they haven't read through it all. Also, the use of emoticons has become such a given, that if you don't use them all the time (which I don't) people will take everything seriously, because "there's no emoticon, so it must be" (as an example, the thread with my rules for Sommer, where none of it was serious, but I was deemed a control freak and arse, which was interesting to follow)

Spot on.

I personally am no big fan of the phrase ”It’s only an Internet forum”

I know that some say it in the sense that, well, no one can physically hurt you, and that you can always log off or ignore certain threads/posters if you wish, that you are in control in the sense.

But sometimes it’s said in a manner that it should not be taken seriously, it’s only a playground for adults. I know almost no one on here, and it would be mighty rich of me to take for granted that everyone is, or can look upon this place and comments in it the same way I do, which is that nothing gets to me in a way that it can bring me down. Oh, I’ll shoot back if fired upon, but no bullet can injure me.
However, we all differ, some might be very sensitive about what is said to them or about them. It can make people as down as a letter, phone call or a shout from the other end of a bar can.

I am glad that you started this thread as it has really been a very thought provoking one and everyones opinions some have differed but they have all been worthwhile to read & learn from.

I have one little bug bear on the forums its not a major thing & I know some people will tell me off & say the forums are open to anyone. Its the popcorn Icon appearing & the classic line " Im interested to see where this is going" like its some sort of amusement at a circus or fair. I sort of feel that if you have soemthing to share then share it , but I do know 7 respect others opions

I know where you’re coming from with the popcorn icon!

I wonder if these persons like to watch Jerry Springer and buy paparazzi press to see what new dog Paris Hilton has adopted and dressed up in K9 Versace outfits?

Although, I don't think everyone who's done that is the kind of voyeur I have in mind, sometimes it’s probably simply an attempt at humour.

Oh, and by the way, steven, this is the thread where if someone starts to jump on another and tell them off, will look quite silly.

steven6611 victor Harbor, South Australia Australia
Thankyou for that, but I was prepared for some comments from some people on here about their rights. I think our new thread will have to be based on Jerry Springer stories from here.

I totally agree that these Forums Threads hurt people. We have seen it! Much pain have been had from words expressed whether on purpose or by accident it does not matter. Sometimes when we have so many different types of people with so many different agendas in one spot can this be.

Debate or not; express an opinion or not; but, please join in and do it your way. Don't let others influence your participation.

now this is a foreign concept that many seem to fail to grasp:

that word (adult) is not based on age but rather on one's ability to understand concepts and react in an appropiate manner depending on varying circumstances... fortunately (for me) many have not reached that stage of maturity (some never do), thus they act like i used to when i was 5....

so if you cant take things with a grain of salt and react appropiately, then you ought to consider going back to momma and making sure to drink your entire bottle of formula and get your binky, as opposed to hanging out in a place where adults congregate and where your zenzitive feelings may get a bubu !!!

and next time any of yall call me a name.... im telling my momma !!!

Hey im not going to praise you this time , I dont want to offend yourolling on the floor laughing rolling on the floor laughing .

Seriously thoughtyes thats so true, there are a couple of forum threads like the Dear Diary one where you can go on and just stir each other up but we all respect one another, its all tongue in cheek, but we have had a couple who as you put it went home to tell mum.

Maturity is a big key and how one reacts is the important point
