northern British Columbia canoeing. Late Spring headin down river, a tributary, a whirlpool, yeah it got us. I was flat foot on bottom and hands out in the air. Panic set in, started to breath water. Then a calm set in, pure peace! The water then let me go! Any similiar experiences to share? Cheers:)

I know alot of people fear drowning. I've never experienced a peace like that before. I often wondered since if it's because of how the first 9 months of our life is spent in the womb. Back to a place we've been.

About 30 years ago I was rafting down the American River in Sacramento California with some friends. We went through some white water and decided to beach the raft and watch others go through the same. After a while I walked up river and went out into the river and decided I would swim through the white water. Dumb idea! I got through the most of it and when on the other side I started to swim to the side of the river. After a while I realized I hadn't moved an inch. I got tired and started going under....

Once I realized if I stopped fighting the river it would bring me to the shore I was okay.

I've never had an experience with near drowning
but,I have had thoughts about it.
I was 14 then.I was in 4 feet of water
as I went under,I had thoughts about how
it would feel if I drowned.I stayed under
water with my eyes open for what seemed
like eternity.Yet I felt at peace,no one
around but me and my thoughts.
Now when I look back at my childhood,
I get scared as I was an adventurous
person.Now,I'm the more wiser. wave
Good post.

thumbs up

No, just total fatigue where I felt I couldn't move anymore. My muscles stopped working.

Good morning.hug
Furthermore,it wasn't a thought
about hurting myself intentionally;
I was an adventurous teenager,
therefore I went to extremes sometimes,
just to be daring,really.

I remember that feeling. I was stuck right in the center. Couldn't go any direction.

When in the Australian bush on a camping weekend I slipped on a slimey rock, flipped in the air, landed on my head knocking myself out and landing in a lake floating face downwards. Luckily friends were there, fished me out and got help. I didn't take in any water as I was unconscious. I got air lifted by helicopter off to hospital, I was out for many hourse 4 or 5 I think.

I've heard that drowning can be a very peacful way to die once the initial panic state subsides.

When I was young I went with family to the beach and while I was swimming in the water a mermaid grabbed my foot and tried to pull me under the water... She wispered to me that it will be ok... I will not drown if I hold onto her... I was so mad when my cousin pulling me out of the water onto the raft...
