There was once three travelers ,who thought they should stop for the night. So to a motel they go and thought they would split the cost of the room three ways. The owner of the motel tells them the room cost is 30 dollars ,so they each chip in 10 dollars each and go to thier room. Now the owner sees that he charged them 5 dollars to much ,so being a honest man calls upon the bellhop and told the bellhop to take the 5 dollars to them and give it back. Now the bellhop is a witty fellow so he thinks "No one knows that they were charged to much so I will give each of them 1 dollar back and keep two for myself" So this is what he does. Now then this means that the travelers each started out chipping in 10 dallars each ,but got 1 dollar each back ,so they each chipped in 9 dollars each, ok. Now 9 times three is 27 ,now add the two that the bellhop put in his pocket makes 29 ,what happened to the other dollar? dunno grin

If they had chipped in $10 dollars at beginning then were to get five back between three of them and if bellboy only gave $1 each then that would be $3 in total which would leave $2 for bell boy, so there is no other dollar..wave

Are you expecting everyone to think on the weekend? I don't get paid to think after the work week! Let me guess - did the manager keep the dollar?cool

Each of the men still had the 10 dollars each, making 30 dollars, when the bellhop got the extra 5 dollars, so in effect the men had 33 dollars and the bell hop had two which made 35 dollars.

The trick/mistake was in getting people to believe you were still talking about 30 dollars.

(And, yes, I worked that out all on my own!)peace

Are you going to say it is because 9 is a magic number then?dunno

If he took the 5 dollars out of the 30 to give them back, then they had onoly paid 25 dollars between them, so when he gave them a dollar each, then they had still only paid 28 dollars between them, and the waiter got 2. the mistake was in assuming that they each paid 9, when in fact theyhad only paid 8.3 dollars.

(Ok I worked that one out too, any points so far?)

well if they started with 30 ...ten each ,and each got back one ...they invested nine each .corret so 9 X 3 = 27 +2 = 29 dunno

No not true, because they didn't invest 9.

between 3 of them they paid 30, then 5 was taken out, so between 3 of them they had now paid 25, (30 -5 = 25). Then they each got 1 more back from the busboy, so add on 3 to the 25 and you get 28. Then the busboy got 2, and 28 +2 = 30.

Now if you divide (25+3), the 28 that they men had, by 3, you get 8.3, and 3x 8.3 =30, so no missing money.

You only assume that they got 9 each , when in fact they didn't.

They got one third of 25, + one dollar each, which = 9.3 dollars.
