Pb moss did a print of the worldtrade center tragedy that pisses me off because it was only about the money. I recently saw a latchook rug that was about fifteen feet by fifteen feet. It was layed flat and designed to be viewed from the second storie, it was an image of the artist's a-hole. This did not bother me because i know the artist and expect this from him ( he has some issues he is expressing ). Where do we draw the line or do we? David? naked cherubs? Geiger? Micky mouse not wearing pants?

LethalLove: What is pornographic...and what is expressive?...what is child abuse and what is art?That's the 3 cent question....and the answer is....
None of it....and all of it...depending what filters one views through.

Art = what is art?

We all have an opinion of what we like and dislike, so where do we draw the line. dunno

Its all about taste

Tis in the eye and mind of the viewer what would be considered offensive. "David" with his penis exposed is one of the greatest works of art. Paintings with women's bosoms showing is considered art and not porn. An artist can even sculpt an erect penis and it would be a work of art. Some artists do go for shock value but the piece still remains artistic expression. An oil painting of a couple copulating is art to me and I would not consider offensive although someone else might. It is how one interprets the art is when it becomes offensive to that someone.

What SV has said is spot on, I have always believed that art is in the eye of the beholder. With any form of art Painting, sculpture, etc if 10 people looked at it you would probably get 10 differing opinions on what it meant to that person. SV used some wonderful analogies which are well presented. In Australia we had a painter Norman Lindsay who was famous for nude paintings. For a long time he was ostracised , but now his work is regarded by many to be some of the greatest art work produced in this country. Art is a form of expression which allows the artist to convey their thoughs, feelings , etc into that piece of work.

I have no issues with any art; however, I do have concerns when my tax dollars pay for some stuff. If the artist produces his craft without government money, then go for it. I can either view it or forget it.

I have no idea how we could sensibly control government produced art--probably we can't. This is one of those win-win and lose-lose situations.
