scousedon: Am I the only one to hear of westerners scamming young vulnerable russians
No scousedon, you are not the only one.
I lived in Ukraine for 3 years and yes I saw and heard of women scammers but unfortunately you are right. There are also men scammers.
I heard many stories from women there about friends who went to live and marry in the US to find it was nothing like what they had been told (not only the US but the majority of men going there looking for wives tend to be from there).
I saw it myself with many of the men visiting there pretending they had big businesses and lots of money. It's easy to give that impression when you are on holidays and have maybe saved for a year to go there. It's not hard to give that impression in a country where the average wage is about $400 per month and a lot of men did use their greater buying power to impress young women who they would not have a chance with back home.
This is the reason why US immigration introduced IMBRA where an American man now wishing to get a fiancee visa for a foreign woman to come and marry him must disclose a lot of personal information to the woman beforehand, such as, his job and salary and whether he has any criminal record.
While there are certainly women scammers, it works both ways and their is fault on both sides.
As regards sending a woman money or gifts that is your decision alone to make but I would say never send it if she asks for it.
Genuine Russian women (I use the term loosely to cover all former soviet countries) are very proud and no matter how hard their life is, will never ask you for money, certainly not before you are in a committed relationship.
