U.S. World Health Organization in 2007 estimated that there 74.1% population of USA considered overweight or obese.

This means that approximately 223,144,701 people in America are facing very serious obesity related health consequences such as heart attack, stroke, diabetes and hypertension.

10 countries in the World with Overweight and obese population

1. Nauru ( small island in the Pacific) 94.5%

2. Micronesia (a small island nation between Hawaii and Indonesia) 91.1%

3. The Cook Island (Of a population of approximately 14,000, roughly 13,000 are obese)
90.9%
4. Tonga (Tongans are genetically predisposed to gaining weight) 90.8%

5. Niue (Another remote South Pacific Island. Here obesity is seen as a sign of wealth) 81.7%

6. Samoa (Biological anthropologists believe that Samoans genetics favor calorie storage as fat tissue. This type of trait is prevalent in communities that have historically experienced food shortages) 80.4%

7. Palau (Another island. Obesity here is attributed to lack of availability of fresh fruits and vegetables) 91.1%

8. Kuwait (One of only 2 countries not in located in the South Pacific. Kuwait has the highest number of overweight people of all Arab nations. Cardiovascular disease is a leading cause of death) 74.2%

9. United States of America (It is estimated that 237 million Americans are currently overweight (2007) 74.1%

10. Kiribati (A cluster of 33 islands in the South Pacific with few natural resources. Kiribati’s problem with obesity can be rooted back to their reliance on high fat imports and little availability of fruits and vegetables) 73.6%

The reason I posted that information. Those Numbers are scary. Those numbers are people who actually straggling with health problems. Why? What’s going on in USA?

What’s going on in Kuwait? I can understand Niue that their culture but USA and Kuwait

I rarely watch TV so I cannot judge about situation from that source of Media. It would be intersting to know what people of Kuwait and USA think about that crisis.

Hi Konigsberg wave

Those are very disturbing numbers.

Judging by what I see around, I trully couldn't agree with estimated 74.1% overweight in USA (2007).

So I looked for answers. And here it is: New York City (Manhattan) 42 percent of residents are overweight or obese. Still pretty high.

But keep in mind that anyone with BMI higher than 25 falls into overweight category, which means:

a 6'00" tall person weighing 185 pounds is overweight, because their calculated BMI is 25.1; the bone structure and muscle tone is not taken into consideration.

In no way I am saying the problem is not real, because it is. Just can't agree with percentage.

Let's assume that the study was scientific.

I guess you're not disputing the facts concerning Tongans and other South Pacific islanders - right?

The study, if scientific, will have compared people on the SAME basis.

Yardy yardy yah yah - ON AVERAGE Americans are grossly overweight compared to other western countries and it's a fact!

I know you're not a lard ass, but a huge amount of your fellow ctizens are - so there! tongue

Very well might be but, but like I said - it's trully NOT what I see around here dunno For sure the percentage is not even close.
Laura25 Somewhere, New York USA
P.S. US is a big country, but if 72% is average, and some places (like an example I posted) are almost half way down, wouldn't it make other places over 100% overweight/obese? Lol. Something like that... conversing laugh dunno

I have very few friends, Robert, and yes, most of them are in excellent shape. But I am not talking about them, I am talking in general:
I agree that it's a very disturbing tendency, but percentage in inaccurate, IMO.

Well, if its a comparative study I'd go along with it.

Where I live in the UK the average kid is really obese; but that's also a socio-economic factor, in my opinion - but statistical studies (if done properly) take account of all factors that they can to determine a true sample of the total known population.

If the study is being done on the whole of the USA there is no way from your own perspective that you could possibly know what the average person is like from every state in the USA; you can only see what you see and that's a TINY sample of your country as a whole.

Hi Laura!wave

I spent 5 years living in New York( Brooklin) and Queens. I've seen the situation too. I moved to States in 1996 and at first I was shoked that people of such sizes is really exist because I have never seen them before in my City with almost 1 million population.

Manhattan is Okay, I think because only well to do people could afford it.

The only place i haven't seen any overweight people was Greenwich Village ... I miss that part of New York.

And you are right even though it is very difficult to research exact percentage ... it is a problem which, in my point of view will become a National disaster if messarments in Health, Edication and Especially in Food Industry will not be done.

Thanks for your opinion and say Hi to Greenwich Village. grin
