"The uncommon reader" by Alan Bennett? What did you think about the book? What was exactly funny about it? Please don't read the critics, I would love to hear your deepest analysis. It's a very short book, you can still read and come back here next weekwink
I thought that Monarchies, especially the Brit has been ridiculised through the book...
My friend said something else and I want to understand how you took it? The rest of the world is very welcome, interested in views of non-monarchical subjects...perhaps that's why I had a different opinion than my monarchical subject friend!
Please don't be shy...

cheers

Hi Cristina

I haven't read the book - Alan Bennett is a bit too high-brow for me.

But, just so you know, lots of us Brits say negative stuff about our monarchy on a regular basis (that's not how I originally wrote it, but want to keep my head - lol). They only get 'respect' if they earn it. If they act like celebrities then they'll be treated as such in the tabloids. Luckily, most of them do conduct themselves with dignity, and are respected. But we still like to 'pull them apart' once in a while. wink

Hi girl!

Thanks for the answer.
It is my friend's book. I took it out of curiosity. I liked his writing and will definitely look for more of his work.
The book describes the Queen's late passion on reading. She reads crap and wants to impress everybody with books that mean nothing on the most understanding circles. She makes fool of herself by asking about them. She feels left apart, small for the first time. And the Government, especially the Prime Minister is concerned on her late passion and tries hard to make her quit. They don't need the Queen to read...even less, writing which she considered at the age of 80! She wanted to leave something of her own!laugh
Anyway, couldn't Alan have picked on another figure of the Monarchy?laugh

And that she knew nothing about her own library, etc.
So funny?

She's probably never had time to read!! Always being controlled by someone. I think it's good that she reads crap - most of us do (by literary standards laugh )

Anyway, if she can't chill out in her 80's, then what's the monarchy coming to?? She's done her time - worked hard - time to relax a bit.

The Uncommon Reader is a comedy book, using real people in a fictitious story, it's funny because the central Character "The Queen" is portrayed as someone who only finds out the joy of reading late in life, becoming totally embroiled in romance novels.
The title plays on the fact that in England a "Commoner" is not a royal person

This sounds like a summery of the book.

Would be nice to have personal feelings about it.

And when she minds the joy of reading, why should she be persecuted on it? If one knows his/her limitations, why should reading intervere with governance?
Ok, Monarchy does nothing special. In the book, the Cabinet was worried that she was going to think more instead of only doing what she was suppose to do. Thinking is not what they do, but act.
Saying that she is above literature, thus she shouldn't bother much about it- sarcasism of course...but mean...or not?

Interfere instead of intervere
