I do not quite understand what they exactly mean when they say they make this and this much or they spend such and such much - is it braging or what?

I haven't noticed thay do that more than any other nationality confused
i am not sure if i do it well trying to be diplomatic, perhps not. so i apologize if i insult any one.
but truly i have spoken and speak (not only in internet) to many americans and almost all of them always speak about money. when ones says he is not rich i am not sure what to say and how act - he makes me feel as if i expect anything. when someone says he has just spent 3 000 dollars for medical examination before getting hired overseas - is it just a statement or is he bragging? many such example have been in my experience and mostly i notice it is americans speak about money. perhaps it is difference of cultures, people of my nation quite seldom would speak about this.
just an observation.

I have never heard bragging from Americans at all... I dont think I have ever noticed anyone talking money on this site.. apart from scam stories I have read..
I dont know what experience you have, but just reading the news and watching CNN I dont think anyone is bragging. .. I think in fact the opposite may be closer to the truth, a lot of people are hurting.

Hope you get the answer that you are looking for. Best wishes to you. bouquet

well, i dont watch television, and have been on this CS site for just a week. but i like this place and this forum - a place where you can find interesting opinions of so many people.
as for my question... well, not even a question, but my personal observation - i have met a lot of people from the United States and UK (i work as a translator/interperter). yes, it would be not correct to judge all nation by some individuals, just those individuals were majority. i am not saying that speaking about money is wrong or good. just i was wondering if is it part of national characteristic or what. or is it me having a fault thought ?

I have just moved to Spain from having spent 8 years in America and trust me, they are all about money, but not heard many actually bragging about it, but they do talk about it....subtle difference. In my humble opinion, Americans are the biggest capatalistic people you will ever meet. For instance, they do not have 'holiday entitlements' like we do in Europe, they have to work for a period before they even get one day off. There are no statatory(sp) days off for sickness either..and each day taken off is a loss of a days pay.

We are very industrious people. When you start a new job you have to earn a paid vacation it isn't automatically given to you. It usually takes a year on the job to get a weeks paid vacation and 6-9 months to get on their medical insurance coverage if they even offer it. Many small co's don't.

I worked for a company that imported a product from Holland and every summer the plant would shut down for 2 months. This created tremendous hardships for us because we had to anticipate everything we would need for the next 2 months such as repair parts. If we didn't order enough, we were screwed. This also financially impacted us because we had to invest so much in inventory every year. It was a contributing factor why the cost of their product was so expensive.

hmmm I do speak to them daily, but money is never a topic of conversation unless it involves a selling/buying arrangements/negotiations of some kind...

Easy answer! Money is what defines and validates them as human beings as a general rule.

I wouldn't say 'industrious' actually...it's just that your working rules and entitlements are so different to those in Europe and dare I say, to the rest of the world. I found it, at times, counter productive that staff had no free time, they appeared tired. When I explained to friends the way it works in Europe, they were astounded and wondered why the USA didn't have those pratices! We, of course, don't have to bother about medical insurance, it's free....that said, it isn't the best in the world but at least you don't have to take out a second mortgage to use the ambulance! I had an accident on my Harley and I had to pay $7000 ABOVE what the insurance paid..and that was only for 17 stitches in my left hand!

To be truthful, I can't see a company closing down for two MONTHS...two WEEKS yes for that is the norm for a summer vacation in Europe.
